Time to get some new members here!

We've had lots and lots of great members and we still do... but over time, things change for people and individuals disappear for one reason or another. Lately, activity on this forum has been pretty low, and I think it's time to get some new blood in here. What do you guys think?

I have a few ideas for things we could do to attract some new members, but I want to hear your ideas first.

Discuss.

MAYHEM45 06-21-07 06:16 PM

Freeeeeeeerolllllllllllllllllllllll

Reel Deal 06-21-07 06:27 PM

Yikes.

How about a low buy-in money-added tourney? Might keep at least a percentage of the loonies away.

Talking Poker 06-21-07 06:29 PM

LOL. I was waiting for that. Ass.

For those who weren't here in November of 2005, is what Mayhem is alluding to. That was hands down the single worst idea I ever had to get new people here, and it damn near wrecked the place.

LOL at . Good times, good times.

The funny thing is most of those retards bans are expired now (this was over a year and a half ago).... oddly enoughm they didn't come back. Go figure.

lightfungus 06-21-07 06:35 PM

League Time!!!

Talking Poker 06-21-07 06:36 PM

Glancing through that old freeroll thread, I see that is what brought good ol' rookette here. Maybe it really WAS a great idea!

thrash1294 06-21-07 06:47 PM

If you set up a few tournies with low buy-ins I think that would work.

pleaseno freeroll:talktothehand

de-coder 06-21-07 06:51 PM

I joined because mathbabe told me about the poker league - which was a lot of fun. Generally I think freerolls are bad and not worth the amount you pay for them - the play is just terrible.

With the full RB that we get for full tilt through here we should be able to attract people that way - of course they would have to not already be a full tilt player.

Robbr25 06-21-07 07:28 PM

How bout somebody wins the Main Event (or at least a bracelet) ?
That will get a lot of people here.

omahilo 06-21-07 07:30 PM

league or a buyin money added tournament should work.

The saddest thing about freerolls like that is that people are willing to do ANYTHING to play in a freeroll where you might... MIGHT win 10 or 20 dollars, its pretty sad when you think about it.

Zybomb 06-21-07 08:12 PM

Finish editing my e-book from 1.5 years ago (still waiting) , promote it, sell lots of copies and plug the forum in it

funny thing is that the book would have to be seriously edited on my part also probably from my advancement in play since the books original writing

juiCe[3x] 06-21-07 08:16 PM

League would be cool. You could do low - limit private tourneys and keep a standing then after a set amount of time the top 9 - 18 or w/e get entered into a $100 freeroll. So people would have to pay to play the events and they get points then the top finishers get in a freeroll.

Talking Poker 06-21-07 09:45 PM

:o

And not only that, but it would need to be changed a lot due to the change in general online play since the original writing too.... Well, I guess the lower limits and basic concepts haven't changed that much, but I still think online poker as a whole has changed pretty significantly.

Talking Poker 06-21-07 09:51 PM

We've done this, and it's cool... the problem is, most people don't notice the freeroll part until well after the events are under way, so it doesn't really draw that many new members.

I'm thinking we should do a series of added money events - not a league, per se, but just our own TPCOOP or something. Better yet, maybe we could figure out how to make a TPOOP!

Hrm.... Talking Poker of Online Poker? OK, it needs some work.

Maybe:
Talking Poker Added Money Series (TPAMS)
or
Talking Poker Online Poker Series (TPOPS)

Meh... the neame doesn't really matter, but I've been leaning towards doing something like this anyway. Still, let's have more suggestions! And in the mean time, refer some friends, will ya?

Invigilator 06-21-07 10:02 PM

Either sounds good to me. Would we be looking at NLH tournaments, or a variety of games?

juiCe[3x] 06-21-07 10:15 PM

Lol, I tried to refer Bigd but that didn't work out all that good.

bunny 06-21-07 10:31 PM

Flirting... FTW? ;)

jillaj 06-21-07 11:09 PM

nude women

bunny 06-21-07 11:11 PM

FYP hehe

Talking Poker 06-21-07 11:14 PM

I don't this this forum can handle any more male nudity than we already have from your avatar, tyvm.

bunny 06-21-07 11:17 PM

You weren't complaining when you had your buns showing.

And why'd you change your avatar? I think the one of you was nice.

Talking Poker 06-21-07 11:19 PM

I was tired of being treated like a piece of meat. Just because I have nice buns doesn't mean I have no brain!!!

bunny 06-21-07 11:20 PM

Now you know how women feel!

bunny 06-21-07 11:29 PM

I actually will get to see more, if I can guess what his tattoo is. hehe

Will probably need some help...new thread coming up.

2Tone 06-22-07 12:06 AM

New blood would do us so some good

With Lou and a few of the other old guard MIA, I think it would be helpful to get some new members. Would it be worth cherrypicking from 2+2 or the blogosphere, sending personal invitations to quality posters/writers inviting them to contribute?

Talking Poker 06-22-07 12:15 AM

I think that is the best idea I've heard yet. I'm not active in any other poker communities, but for those of you who are, send out some personal invitations. Don't spam mindlessly, of course, but if there are people you think would enjoy this site and would be good additions to our community, by all means invite them.

bigd007x 06-22-07 01:31 AM

i know this is probaly just a stupid post like all my others but what if ev1 could use the talking poker logos for there poker names might increase some members and some guaranteed tourneys for members only.

bunny 06-22-07 01:41 AM

PS won't allow me any more changes to my avatar. Used up too many, already.

bunny 06-22-07 01:43 AM

We could invite a Pro Player to the site and maybe even set up a tourney with him/her.

Wes 06-22-07 03:01 AM

Pretty sure making the forums private discourages people to sign up.

Talking Poker 06-22-07 03:31 AM

Really? I think it does the opposite.

Sure, we'd have a lot more READERS if the forums were open, but I don't think we'd have any more posters.

Wes 06-22-07 04:18 AM

When I'm going to join a new forum, I lurk for a couple days/weeks. Then, if I decide I want to comment, I join. I don't think I have ever just joined a forum not even reading any threads at all from the site.

If this forum was private when I first saw it, I probably would have just moved along and never joined. Of course, I'm sure there are some people that would like to have seen me move on.

eejit101 06-22-07 06:56 AM

TPOPS made me rofl. Sounds like a great plan.

And rofl at bunny defending all her "women with nice buns have a brain"........ mmmmmhmmmm, course they do. No longer ago than last night, i had a woman ask me what was in a Vodka Red bull..... and she has a stunning figure. And another the way to the pub she was already in.

Maybe you have a brain, but i havent seen your ass so i cant comment.

MAYHEM45 06-22-07 07:30 AM

I agree with this, the forums should be open.

bunny 06-22-07 08:20 AM

I like the fact it's set to private though, since we have pictures posted of ourselves.

If it's possible to lock some threads to keep them private, while opening the rest for public viewing ...I think that would be great.

It would also be an added incentive for someone trying to view those private threads ...to register in order to view them.

The best possible idea, if you could make it happen would be to :

Keep the poker discussion area open for public viewing and block off all the rest.

Reel Deal 06-22-07 10:29 AM

FYP

badblood44 06-22-07 10:42 AM

Now that my corporate proxy is allowing me through, I hope I can participate more. As such, I'd be happy to plug this forum in a post on the blog.

I always thought that this was a better forum than most, it managed to stay relatively on the mature side (some exceptions of course) and it being on the smaller side was actually a plus for me.

I'll put something up this weekend.

Nikita 06-22-07 11:16 AM

I've got a link on my blog to here, but I don't really get that many visitors, and I think most of the regulars are from here anyway.

I'm also thinking there are a few people out there who never joined TP.com as they couldn't lurk the site first.

omahilo 06-22-07 11:33 AM

hey welcome back badblood... long time no see.

I would be up for a series of tournaments... with a variety of games of course.

Invigilator 06-22-07 01:24 PM

I like the ide of making the general discussion public.

Opening up the whole thing? Well, we've seen how things can go if someone puts their mind to being a goof and screwing up threads. Going public will add in the casual, lazy goofs too.

Talking Poker 06-22-07 01:51 PM

This is a decent idea, and one that I think I could do. When I started the forum, it was wide open. I eventually made it private because we had SO MANY lurkers and I was hoping to get more of those people to register. Also, when certain douchebags go and get themselves banned, I don't think they should be able to have full access to the site any more, with the only difference being that they can no longer post.

You guys make valid points though. And I guess most of the other big poker forums are wide open, aren't they?

I think it might make the most sence to open up the "All Things Poker" (5), "More Things Poker" (3) and "Admin" (1) sections, leaving only the Multimedia (2) and Off Topic (2) sections private. That way, people can access all the poker talk they want, but if they want to download videos (not that people have been posting many videos lately) or go through the off topic shennanigans, they'll need to register for the site.

I don't have to break it down like that, btw... that would just be easiest. We may want to keep "Railbird" private too, for example.

Meh, I don't know. I'm back and forth on this, but it's definitely worth more thought. Thanks.

Talking Poker 06-22-07 01:53 PM

I don't remember who, but I know for a fact that there are people who found us through your blog in the past, so thanks in advance. A random plug is fine, but if you'd rather wait until we set up an added money tourney or something and plug that, that's fine too. We'll be having one soon, for sure.

Talking Poker 06-22-07 01:55 PM

I actually think the General Discussion should be that LAST part of the site opened up. That's where the non-poker stuff is, including all the picture threads that bunny was referring to and so on.

Invigilator 06-22-07 02:01 PM

Okay, I can see that. What would be a good idea to open up though. I figure the visigoths are gonna sack Rome no matter what gate you open.

EDIT: as I am posting this, Mrs. Invig comes in with a sandwich for me. I am looking at the screen and thinking PB&J as I shove it in my mouth. Try "Tuna and Mustard" instead. I thought I was gonna gag. I like the sandwich, but I was expecting something else.

Almost spewed on the keyboard!

EDIT 2: Talk to guys on Sunday night. I'm headed out for the weekend!

Talking Poker 06-22-07 02:13 PM

Speaking of sending new people here (especially for you bloggers), did you know that you can embed your user ID into your link so you get "credit" for the referral? "Credit" is pretty much worthless (at least right now), but it's a good way to get yourself on the "Top Referrers" list on the home page if nothing else!

Here is a quote from the FAQ about how this works. Note that this quote is from ME accessing the FAQ, so it says "referrerid=1" (my user id is "1"). You'd need to change the 1 to YOUR user number, which you can find easily by going to your Profile and looking at the number at the end of the URL -

From the FAQ:

So, Badblood, for example, should use this link when links to us:

PShabi 06-22-07 03:15 PM

I too believe that removing the "privacy" of the board would help get new registrations.

Talking Poker 06-22-07 03:29 PM

Already taken care of.

bunny 06-22-07 04:09 PM

What a Great Idea!
