Anyone bet on sports also?
Either via an off-shore account or local guy?
Maybe a good spot to trade plays here in the OT forum. |
As far as football betting, I feel like there is so much parity in the NFL that "on any given sunday" any team can win.
I have seen to many friends really get into the hole when they bet on games. Why not take that money and sit at a poker table? I definitely like my odds better. Don't you? |
I have bet (mostly on football) using since 1996 or 1997. It's been a long time, and I'm a happy customer.
With that said, I don't bet much any more. I do it because it makes the games more interesting, not to make money. That's what poker is for! |
Agreed, but winning is always more fun that losing. Though in NFL I seem to get "rivered" by the refs alot :(
|
No, LOL, you just don't cover because the winning team decided to kneel on the ball and run the clock out, instead of kicking the 35 yd. field goal.
GO Eagles. :) 5-0 Baby! |
Damn right!
|
So many things are going good for this team right now. Terrell was a huge addition, and Javon is a maniac! Did you see how good Brian Dawkins played this week? He was so fired up.
|
I'm sorry to rain on yer parade
but the eagles are going to imlpode in theplay offs just like every other year..a team who canonly score 19 against the bears has big problems, wait till you play a team who has a good 4-6 d and yer toast...TO's a loud mouth btw and will never compare to moss even though I don't like that pot smoking chimp eihter..
|
We'll see about that. Right now, they are playing very well. ESPN has them ranked in the top 2 of their PowerRankings (damn Patriots!). Just to comment on some of your comments:
We're toast when they play a good team w/ a D: Eagles play the Ravens after next week, I believe. Does that constitute a good D? They have too many options. Terrell, Westbrook, good TEs, an O-Line that's been playing better and better. Terrell a loud mouth: The good thing about Terrell is that he makes plays. You can like him... he'll make plays. Hate him? Still make plays. He also takes coverage off of the wide receivers AND the tight ends when the defense is playing something like a Cover-2. As of yet, he hasn't done anything bad, and his "loud-mouth" personality fits right in with the rest of the NFL. I can't even watch a linebacker tackle a running back w/out seeing him get up and celebrate. Loud mouth or not, 4 catches 124 yds is very impressive. |
i generally like to play a couple of parlays on the nfl games, just for fun. i have a buddy in vegas who lays down the bets for me, which is convenient, but also a little dangerous.
the only thing i would worry about for the eagles fans is kearse's health. with a pretty significant history of foot injuries, i dont know if you can count on him for a full season. otherwise, you guys look pretty good right now. owens has been a huge addition. before i thought that mcnabb was pretty significantly overrated, but now he has been spectacular. still, i feel pretty good about my pats right now. |
To get back on topic, yeah I do like to lay action every now and then...which means every week but one so far this year. I've been doing a lot of teasing this year, with very good results so far...not to toot my own horn or anything. I'm up 13 units this year so far on the NFL, which is the only football i bet on...dont pay nearly enough attention to college.
Also, Ive made a few selective baseball bets during the playoffs, mostly on the money lines, with a couple over/unders.....and amazingle enough, the only baseball bet ive lost was Game 2 of the Houstan Atlanta series.....its been a really good run so far.... Not tryin to say im some guru or anything, but all the breaks have definately been falling my way so far this season. If anyone wants to talk about specific picks, fire away |
Nice job on getting some NFL wins. From an Eagles perspective, where do you see their 2-3 losses this season? I really don't see them losing more than 3.
Their first might come against the Ravens in two weeks, and for some reason, they always split with the Cowboys. Your thoughts? |
The Eagles have the inside track to home field throughout the playoffs by far in my mind....they have an extremely easy schedule. They really lucked out in facing the AFC central this year, as opposed to the South or the East.
That being said, the key to beating the Eagles will be stoping the big play, and putting up at least 21 points. They should have lost the Monday night game against the Vikings... they really only put that one away when TO caught the long touchdown pass (which wasnt actually a catch, but that's why Mike Tice won't ever win a championship) Though the Eagles appear to be jugernauts who blow everyone out, when you look at the stats, they give up a lot of yards and first downs. Did you know that over the first 5 games, Philly actually has LESS first downs combined than their opponents? That's a telling number, and it all goes back to getting, or stopping, the home run ball...depending on your perspective. Now, who do I think can beat them? A team with a ball control offense that doesnt turn the ball over too much, and doesnt give up too many big plays. Baltimore is not that team in my mind. Without Jamal Lewis, this team is just plain awful, and as it stands now, Lewis wont play against in the Eagles game. I would be worried about the Steelers....and if we are talking about the spread, I definately would not feel comfortable giving the Steelers 7 points or more. They have the exact type of team that could give Philly lots of trouble, plus the game will be in Pittsburgh. Of course, Im not betting against philly till they lose, so i will probably just lay off that game....im gonna ride that horse till she bucks me, same with indy. In fact, I have teased indy and philly together every possible week so far, and they've covered every time |
As far as the Steelers game goes....
I think this is actually the type of team that Philly CAN blowout. I not a die hard Steeler fan, but I do follow them and they have no defense for a mobile QB like McNabb, none whatsoever. Their secondary actually got better with the injury to Chad Scott in my opinion, but I would rather trot out 10 guys on defense than let him loose back there. Seriously though, the steelers can't contain a guy like McNabb and have no options to cover TO, lay the number in this one up to 7 or even 8 I would say. As rediculous as it sounds I think the Steelers have a better chance of beating New England than they do the Eagles.
|
The moblie QB issue is almost moot nowadays. McNabb has so many targets that he simply doesn't run anymore. And, to mix it up (+occasionally throw off the defense) I would have him run - at least 3/4 times a game.
His "mobileness" has helped him escape some sticky situations when his o-line has collapsed, but even that doesn't happen too often. |
Nice reply.
Among the Philly fans, the Steelers game is the "big" game we're waiting for. It should be the best game so far this season. (And how about the Giants!? Playing very well lately.) |
On a side note, here are my top picks for week 7, if anyone cares:
Tease: Philly from -7 down to -1 against the Browns with the Dolphins + 6 to +12 at home against the Rams Reasoning: Most people think this is an automatic win for the Rams, and would think this is a crazy bet...always a good sign. There's a reason bookies buy new cars every year. This is a classic let-down game for the Rams. One of the keys to not falling into the let down game trap in this league is coaching...and Mike Martz doesnt impress me. It seems to me that Martz will only get smart when the press is on him after a loss...and they are riding high this week after two solid wins, so Martz should probably be back in his "I'm a genius, let's make crazy calls" attitude yet again. The key to this game for Miami will be turnovers. The defense is just as good as it always has been, with good shutdown corners, and throughout his short career, Bulger has not proven he is capable of finding his 3rd and 4th recievers...this is where most of his picks come from. Giving the Miami offense consistently good field position could lead to an out-right win in this game. On the flip side, the Rams defense is very weak against the run, and Sammy Morris is a big punishing back who can move the chains, and move the clock. Like i said in an earlier post, I'm riding Philly till the buck me. This was a long post, so i'll bust out another one for other picks |
Continuing with week 7 thoughts:
If ya just cant stomach betting on the dolphins, I also like teasin Buffalo from +6 up to +12 against the ravens with Philly Reasoning: This Buffalo team has played every game tough. They lost to Jacksonville by 3 on a last second td, oakland by 3, the jets by 2 on a last min fg, and to new england by 14...but even in that game, the bills were at the pats 25, down by 7 with a 2 min left, when the pats forced a fumble and took it to the house to seal the game. All that being said, I just can't see this Ravens team, without Jamal Lewis, beating the Bills by more 11. And if you consider that the over/under on this game is 31.5.....vegas does not expect a high scoring affair, which just reinforces my belief that the ravens wont win by more than 11 In fact, my tease of the week is Buffalo (moving the line from +6 to +12) with Philly ( moving the line from -7 to -1) I'm gonna put 2 units on this tease |
Im going to lay off on my hunch about teasin the Dolphins to +12, even though i really like it. All the signs are there, but i have another one in mind besides my main Buffalo and Philly tease.
I'm going to tease the under of the giants lions game up to 46. the giants have only reached this number once, in week one at philly in a 31-17 loss, and the lions have also only reached this once, last week losing 38-10 against GB in a really really pitiful game. Vegas always pads the over/unders upwards a couple points, cause the majority of people who bet on totals tend to bet the over. So far, the giants are averaging 21 points a game, and detroit on 17.5....i think this number is to high Also, the same with dallas and green bay...almost same exact point averages, dallas with 17.4 and Gb with 22.8, notorius rivals with better pass defenses than run defenses....teasin it up to 50 ( the 4 point higher number is very odd here, especially given the good pass defense of both teams) 2 units here also. Extra pick, if ya'll feelin lucky.....dallas/gb under with Philly together, 1 unit |
Buffalo wil probably be my biggest play of the day. I will steer clear of the Dolphins simply because I have a rule about not asking bad teams to do something good for me till they show they actually can. I broke that rule yesterday with Penn St in a very easy spot against Iowa and got reminded why I have that rule, I think that is the first time I bet on a team that scored 4 friggin points and still almost got the cover.
|
Word- Eagles are going all the way this year. (but of course- I've said that he last three years.. oh well, at least they've been consistent)
|
Down in flames!
|
Wow, Eagles almost lost today. But I'm glad they almost did- they needed that wake up call.
|
Everything went wrong in that Buffalo game. Bledsoe throws 4 picks, 1 that is returned for a touchdown, 1 that is returned to the 6. Can't win like that.
Well, everything had to go wrong for them not to cover that spread, but i still like the reasoning. And that hunch about the dolphins sure was right. |
Agreed. Well done.
|
bad week 4, lost 3 units, luckily i decided to switch my extra pick to the lions/giants under with philly, cause both games were on at 1 and i wanted to see where i was at before the late games.
but hey, any of ya'll who do this know there's gonna be bumps in the road |
E..a..g..l..e..s ... Eagles!
6-0.
Who's ya daddy? |
i think that the eagles daddy is the nfc championship game.
i love the eagles this year, but i wouldnt exactly be bragging about a squeaker ot win in cleveland. i do think they are the best team in the nfc though, and im not sure that it is even close. |
i forgot to mention that i got my ass handed to me this week on my pro bets. way too many upsets and blowouts that were absolutely awful for me. i couldnt even get close on a teaser card.
|
last figure
interesting notes....
going into week 7, these are the numbers against the spread Favorites -- 37-48-3 Home Teams -- 36-49-3 Home Underdogs -- 11-12-1 Underdogs winning outright -- 36 for 48 (75%) this week, favorites were 5-8-1 vs the spread home teams were 9-4-1 against the spread home underdogs went 4-0 against the spread, with only cleveland losing the game, in ot to philly so, home dogs are now 15-11-1 this year, not too shabby at all |
Well, I don't mean to brag about an overtime win against Cleveland, but a win is a win. In my opinion, the "roughing the passer" call against Brian Dawkins was trash. [4th and 6, Garcia makes bad pass, Dawkins jumps to block... incidental contact upon coming down to the ground.]
If anyone else saw that call, it was ridiculous. Sent into OT, I think Andy Reid made two bad calls: TWICE 3rd and 1, and he called for a very low-percentage play. Luckily, Akers was able to get off the 50 yarder. Ok enough. :) |
I didnt see the game, but I've seen way too many teams try to get cute on 3rd and 1 or 2 this year. Running a reverse, or throwing a deep ball, which doesn't work and just lead to punts. Nothing pisses me off more than this, especially if it affects my wagers.
|
i agree about the call against dawkins. i cant stand the protection that qbs get in the nfl. they are playing tackle football, not two hand touch or flag. i really dont that that qbs, or receivers going over the middle for that matter, should get any preferential treatment.
|
anyone have good picks for this weekend?
i like arizona +3 at buffalo, indy -1 at kc. i also dont think that philly can cover 8 against the ravens. especially with westbrook either hobbled or out. |
im gonna jump on green bay at -1...taylor, the monster strong safety for the skins, is out
also gonna tease the lions to +9 with the chargers to even |
also.....teasing the vikes down to -.5....roy williams is a late scratch for the lions.....plus the bengals to +9 against the titans....mcnair is out and brown is hurting
Also, the forum hasnt adjusted to day light savings time, so it's really 12:08 right now, and not 1:08 like it will say........no cheating here on my picks |
gosh i just screwed that up....scratching my lions bet from earlier because roy williams is out ......changing it to teasing the chargers to even with the bengals to +9......and teasing the colts and the eagles together....colts to +6 and philly to -1....philly hasnt let me down yet, gonna keep on riding em
disgregard all viking talk, they've been my nemesis all year |
don't bet on your team that's your mistake, too many emotions involved :D
|
i almost never bet on the pats. just way too much emotion involved. of course, i teased them this week to +3 at pitt, but it doesnt look like that is going to turn out well.
|
solid week, up another 2 units, minus the juice from the indy-philly tease....that green bay game was my lock when it was announced taylor was out for the packers. About 5 of my buddies regularly put action down, and we always differ and usually never all pick the same game...except for this game. Each of us had 2 units on the Pack....and i got a feeling our book took a huge beating on that game.
Side note...god damn colts...one late touchdown loses 2 units....chargers came through like expected, as did the bengals and eagles. Glad i layed off the vikes, i wont bet on them ever they fuck me whatever way i go with them, and the lions. Funny thing about the bengals, i seem to have a connection with them, because i am 4-0 in wagers involving them, either to cover or lose. Monday night game....if the line moves up to Miami +7.5 (it is at 7 right now), I'm gonna jump on the Fins. Monday night underdogs have an incredible tendancy to win outright...and this number would be enough to jump on. If it stays at 7, im layin off. |
I feel the same way as you eddo...the only game all year ive touched with the pats was the buffalo game, teased the pats with the over for a W...the over (teased down) went over in the 1st half of that game which was nice.
By the way, is it just me, or was that loss today a whole lot easier to take after the Sox big win....i guess the sports gods thought we've been on too much of a roll city wise, and figured to give someone else some light today.... |
EAGLES: Only undefeated team in the league!
Next week is at Pittsburgh, and the spread will probably put them favorites by maybe 3 or 5 pts. Anyone like the Eag's here? |
yeah, that loss was very easy to take after the sox win. everyone knew that they were going to lose sometime, and now was as good as any, i guess. its tough that they lost it by playing absolutely awful football in the first quarter, and that they really seem to be hurt by injuries right now, but they will bounce back.
i dont care though. the sox just won it all. i can put away my cynicism for a while now. |
Line opened at 1.5, would not bet against Pittsburgh right now, Roethlisberger is dangerous and doesn't know he should be overwhelmed right now. Having said that, I posted earlier in this thread that Philly is the kind of team to blow out Pittsburgh, so I guess I just have to watch this one (who am I kidding). |
roethlisberger is definatly playing out of his mind right now, IMO he has potential to be another payton.
|
i dont see him as a peyton at all. i think he has much better mobility, and while i dont think that he will be a similar quarterback as peyotn, he defintely has the potential to be a comparable one. he has looked absolutely unbelieveable all year. i cant believe that two qb's went before him in the draft. the giants and chargers cant be feeling too good about themselves right now.
|
I guess we'll find out of they ever let Eli play. |
i just think that the fact that eli and rivers are on the bench behind two guys who were all bu tdead last year should tell us something. yeah, brees and warner are playing pretty well, but i am not sure what happened to them betwen last year and this year. maybe it was motivation knowing that their jobs were on the line, but im still not sure.
i thought that it was ridiculous when people said eli was better than peyton, and it looks even worse right now. |
I'll have to track down the exact details of the draft day this year, but apparently Jacksonville played a giant part in our getting Big Ben. Again the details aren't fresh in my mind but apparently Buffalo wanted Roethlisberger more than their next breath and wanted despartly to trade up ahead of Pittsburgh, who they knew were also interested, with Jacksonville. Jacksonville was apparently scared to death that their pick Reggie Williams would not be available at the 12 spot, which was rediculous since Buffalo told them of their intentions, Houston wanted Robinson and said as much, Pittsburgh had NO NEED for a reciever, especially one who was projected to go later in the first round, or even slip to the second round, and the Jets (I think drafted 11th) wanted a defensive specalist as well, so there was no reason for Jacksonville to worry about Williams being taken and were offered a kings ransom to trade with Buffalo, but refused because they wanted to lock up Williams. Again these details may be a bit skewed, but thats the jist of the story on how Ben ended up in Black and Gold. If I recall the last time we got a star QB it was in a coin flip with Chicago and we got Terry Bradshaw.
|
As someone mentioned, there's so much parity in the NFL it's almost impossible. And then there is the point spread too. Last week I lost the Phily game when the eagles gave up a nothing touchdown but I managed to win the 2 night games (Chicago and NYJ)
I made alot on hockey over the years so I miss that. I have an NBA parley every night (3 games which give 7-1 odds) I won on opening night but lost yesterday. For tonight, I think Minnesota +2 At Denver is really a good pick. I dont know anything about the new team Charlotte, they're a 4 point dog at home against the Wizards. BlackCoffee |
