Attention Lurkers, Attention Lurkers: Free $$

This post is aimed at the many people who have accounts here but have never posted.

If you registered BEFORE April, 2006 (that means March 2006 or earlier) and have yet to make a single post, you're eligible to win.

What's the prize? $20 transferred to you at . Free money. Consider it a bankroll boost, or a bankroll start, as the case may be.

To win, all you need to do is make your first post in this thread and tell us why you should get the $20. Be sure to mention why you haven't posted yet too - and don't say because you were waiting for this contest! :)

I'll either decide on my own or maybe we'll take a vote, but someone will be getting $20. And I haven't decided how long we'll be running this little contest, so you had better get posting so you don't miss out!

Looks like you have yourself a winner.... if he or she posts on here!

Talking Poker 04-05-06 12:26 AM

Not necessarily. The winner could be someone who hasn't been here for a week or a month or a year. They just need to have 0 posts and have been registered BEFORE April 2006.

Spuddy 04-05-06 12:28 AM

True, but an opportune moment for JTown....

Talking Poker 04-05-06 12:33 AM

Very true, especially considering:
:D

But remember, it's not the FIRST person to post who wins... it's the person with the best reason of why they should win who wins.

Of course, in order to even have a CHANCE, you need to post in this thread, so yeah, I'm with you.

Let's hear it, JTown.

bunny 04-05-06 12:35 AM

Am I allowed emailing someone to alert them to this contest?

eejit101 04-05-06 12:35 AM

As this is my first post here ( check my stats top right if you dont believe me ) id like to say i deserve a free $10 just for making this post in the humour that is making TP.com a great place to be and post in.

I als think i deserve it as it will recover the pot tourney buy in i lost with AA vs KK just 10 minutes ago

Spuddy 04-05-06 12:39 AM

Post count -1?! :p

Talking Poker 04-05-06 12:48 AM

Let me check the rules.

Well, there's no mention of that, so sure, I guess.

JTown15 04-05-06 10:28 AM

The Lurker

Well I guess I have been called out by the man himself TP, so for $20 I'll attempt to give it a shot, can't hurt I guess. :)

I spend a lot of my time playing poker on pokerstars as ID: Jonesy15. Instead of working on school work, I'm usually logged on playing, which is bad but at least I have been doing fairly well. I usually play 0.50-1 limit, or .25-.50 no limit cash games. My most success has been on the $5.50 and 11 SNGs.

I'm usually reading TP forums between games, or whenever I have the chance to play, just because I love listening to poker stories and different hands that people play and ask advice for. I am always looking to get better and advice from TP and other people that have played the game for a long time have helped me.

I have railed TP in some of the $50 180 SNG's just to see how he plays and watched him take down his win awhile ago, very impressive. I also saw the hand where the guy called you with ace high when u had 34, and could have guessed your hand when u posted that thread. Why I have never gotten around to posting is really because I felt I didn't have anything to offer, rather choosing to soak up what other people have to say. Not a great reason but that's all I got. The money isn't a big deal, but I'll try to contribute a little more to the forum since I think this posting will help me make future posts.

Thanks for the great forum, and look forward to making more posts.

Cheers,
JTown

PS: Don't Tap the Aquarium

Talking Poker 04-05-06 12:42 PM

We have a leader!

Welcome to the forum, thanks for posting, and I'm glad to hear you have been getting something out of this place, despite your lack of contributing! ;)

Ok, who's next? Come on lurkers... let's go!

eejit101 04-05-06 12:45 PM

Never mind a lurker, you have a stalker!!!

Nice port thought JT, nice post

MAYHEM45 04-05-06 02:23 PM

I was just like JTown for a long time. I lurked here for months before I started posting. Lets hear some more 1st posts guys!

Talking Poker 04-05-06 02:42 PM

Did you really? That's funny. Glad you finally decided to step forward and make that first post!

While I think someone could get a lot from this forum just by reading, I think they could get a lot more by participating - posting some of their own HHs, commenting on others (right or wrong, this forces you to REALLY think through situations and this makes you a better player), and in general, just becoming a part of the community.

WizeGuy 04-05-06 04:15 PM

Bunny say to me to come and so i am here. she too sexy to say no to.:p

I do not post parceque i do not write good english.

I do faveur pour Bunny... become partypokerplaya she say she give me date. I see no date et no bunnykiss. :D :D :D

She tell me I have to say something nice to win money. J'ne sais pas quoi dire. Alors, i will give you something i find of sophie. we one time good friend, then lose touch. Voila sexy sophie et sexy me, Alex. :D

jimmym 04-05-06 04:28 PM

GOOD POST...................whos on the Bud now

eejit101 04-05-06 04:31 PM

Bonjour Wizeguy. A aimé le poteau. Il est évident que vous avez une petite hantise avec le lapin :) Bon pour avoir finalement de vous signaler, et de la chance en cette concurrence.

Talking Poker 04-05-06 04:56 PM

(This will be ugly, but no translation help used, so cut me some slack)

Je parle (ecrit?) un tres, tres, tres peux Francais. Merci pour la poste, WizeGuy! Et merci pour la photo sexy de bunny. hawh-hawh-HUH! (Mon laugh francais)

Wow... mon francais est merde, eh?

Aurevoir!

eejit101 04-05-06 05:00 PM

Tranlates as....

I speak one very, very, very can French. Thank you for the post office, WizeGuy! And thank you for the sexy photograph for bunny. hawh-hawh-HUH! (My French laugh) Is Wow... my French shit, eh? Bye!

Spuddy 04-05-06 05:03 PM

Jtown sounds like the man........

Plus, I love his Phil Gordon "Dont tap the aquarium" reference!

Welcome to the forums Jtown!

Talking Poker 04-05-06 05:11 PM

Oh come on... it wasn't quite that bad. I mean, "Is Wow?"

Talking Poker 04-05-06 05:26 PM

BTW.... those with 0 posts who have visited the forum today include:
thecardmasta

And that's it. There are a few people with less than 5 posts.... I'm not saying that they are or are not eligible to win (leaning towards not), but it certainly wouldn't hurt if they decided to formally introduce themselves anyway!

Spuddy 04-05-06 05:27 PM

When are you closing this contest TP?

hiimbob12 04-05-06 05:38 PM

hey i think...

Hey, I signed up a while ago when i saw someones location at PS as talkingpoker.com. I usually lurk here, but never have felt that I should post. I love reading everything here, whether its bad beats (sorry), or someone flopping quads. ITs also great to read about how much I should sit with at a cash game(ALWAYS the max lol) and someone going deep in a huge tourny. I might not deserve the 20$ ( I think i do!!), but I do love the site

Talking Poker 04-05-06 05:44 PM

Hey - we got another one!

Thanks for posting - it's much appreciated. Welcome to the forum (3 months later) and I hope you decide to post more in the future.

Talking Poker 04-05-06 05:45 PM

Whenever I feel like it. :D

Maybe in 5 minutes... maybe on April 30th. Probably somewhere in between.

bunny 04-05-06 07:27 PM

I

AM

GOING

TO

KILL

YOU

ALEXANDRE!

Print it!

edit: Okay, Killing him is a bit much. I won't hurt him, on condition he removes the picture from here and retracts his lie, of me offering him a date in exchange for the Party favor. Which never happened.

La dernière fois que j'te demande de me faire une faveur, Alex. Menteur.

TalkingPoker - I think WizeGuy should be disqualified and I think you should consider adding "verysolvent" to this list. He's only had 5 posts but ever since I asked him to come, he's at least participated and posted. That's deserving of something, don't you think?

eejit101 04-05-06 07:28 PM

If you wear something nice hell probably let you:D

bunny 04-05-06 08:06 PM

LOL. Not quite. You must have used a translator.

His french isn't all that bad. You have to remember, Quebecers are used to slang words, so we'd understand "poste" in the context it is written and not in the meaning of the word itself.

If a Quebecer, such as myself, translates this; you'd get: I speak (write) a very very very little French. And thankyou for the photo sexy of bunny. Hawh-hawh-hawh-HUH! (My laugh francais)

Wow...my french is shit, eh?

Goodbye. (Salut = bye)

First off, we don't have a stupid French laugh, we're not honky tonk people.
We say, "eh" or "ay" a lot. I mean "a lot". We end it at every (verbal) sentence whether it needs to be there or not. Form of habit.

LOL = RTF (rire tres fort)

eejit101 04-05-06 08:21 PM

No, as im european, i used the literal french homeland translation

Talking Poker 04-05-06 08:40 PM

Maybe, but not this contest. This one is for the true lurkers. And so far so good! (Meaning, it's working, at least a little bit)

P.S. I like that you wrote "Print it."

Talking Poker 04-05-06 08:43 PM

I was going for the France french, but bunny's Quyebec translation is closer to what I intended. I think eejit just did a sucky job of translating. That's what I think.

And I remembered the word for "write" - Sweet!

As for the laugh, you know that old stereotype... from about 1000 movies and tv shows. It's not a literal sound - it's the "I am so much better than you" kind of laugh. It's a bitch to spell though.

bunny 04-06-06 07:21 AM

Hope you're joking. He's 85% French, so to see him even write this much, is impressive.

I'm not happy with him, posting my picture up, though. But knowing how he is, (like his namesake) my own fault for alerting him to this contest. Expect the unexpectable from him.

Lesson learned.

edit: 85% French speaking.

eejit101 04-06-06 12:49 PM

How can you be 85% french. When he was born, was the hospital an eight in the english sector? And when he popped out, his body from the knees down was in the english sector too??

Shadowknife 04-08-06 04:54 PM

Bah, I suppose for $20 I can give up my lurkerness (new word?).

I've been wanted to get into playing some online poker for a while now. I play the occasional home game here and there, but nothing serious. However, I do have an obsessive-compulsive personality, and usually spend more time reading and studying anything I do moreso than actually doing it (hence my lurking here for so long). Perhaps I need a little kickstart to get playing *nudge nudge*.

While I'm certainly not a 'great' player, I can pretty much count on cleaning up on anyone who's bad, new, drunk, high, or just not taking the game seriously. I bring my chips to any weekend party trip to the cottage, and have my beer paid for by the end. I'm patient, understand the basic strategies, and can pick up on the typical 'newbie' tells. Against anyone who really knows what they're doing though... I'd have to rely more on a good run of luck.

Something I've wanted to do for a while is learn how to play some limit hold-em, well enough to hopefully break even with some low-level online play. I was bored one day, and bought Helmuth's book, but wasn't all that impressed with it. If someone could recommend a good book, it'd be much appreciated.

Cheers,

~Chris

Edit: Awwe, why no animated avatars? I can't frequent a forum without my favourite! :P

jimmym 04-08-06 05:33 PM

Nice post man,

I have a strange feeling we will hear more from you and your poker journeys, I reacon you will overtake me for posts within 2 months. wellcome and GL.

eejit101 04-08-06 06:14 PM

I really like this post, and where you say against anyone whose good, you rely on luck. Your basically suited to play any limit on party poker online, up to $1000NL, as they are all rubbish.

Talking Poker 04-08-06 06:52 PM

I'd say "Welcome to the forum!" but seeing as how you've been here for A YEAR AND A HALF (without making a single post), that seems a little silly. Wow.... You joined this site on the 3rd full day that it was "live" - that's before nearly all of today's regulars. Crazy.

Anyway, now that you've popped your cherry, I hope to hear from you a lot more.

As for your two questions:

1. Books - Do a search of the forum for detailed recommendations, but for low limit hold em, Small Stakes Hold'Em (Miller/Sklansky) is hands down the best. Lee Jone's Winning Low Limit Hold'Em is good too.

2. You are allowed to have an animated avatar.... once you get to 1000 posts. So, let's see... at your current pace, that should be approximately... carry the one.... yeah, right around the year 3504. Give or take. :D

eejit101 04-08-06 07:44 PM

Lmao at number 2.

Good luck reaching that age.

And i didnt know Lee Jones wrote a book. Is the the poker stars lee jones, or someone else

bunny 04-08-06 09:23 PM

If you're only allowed animated avatars at 1000 posts, how is it possibly jim as one at 300?

jimmym 04-08-06 09:28 PM

Sorry mate i was the first ever on the forum too have one,,, Now if TP wants to remove it then its up to him, but i was the first and did bother to discover my fish. PLEASE LEAVE ME ALONE AT THIS MOMENT I FEEEL VUNREBALE. just look at my typing its fucked and am all over the place leave me alone for fuck sake.

bunny 04-08-06 09:50 PM

Okay, I'll let this slide considering you're drunk. If you don't want TP to see it, we can always delete our posts. But since you were the first ever to have one, I don't think he should take it away from you. I don't care to have an animated avatar anyway.

Shadowknife 04-08-06 11:03 PM

Yup, I remember someone, from another forum, posting about this "great new poker forum giving away money for posting!". What was it? 50 posts? Guess I was a little slow in starting ;). I guess I'll have to step it up if I want my favourite animated avatar... this post will be a step in that direction :P.

Thanks for the book recommendations, I'll check em out.

~Chris

bunny 04-09-06 11:02 AM

If those eyes on your avatar start to move, I'm out of here.

Shadowknife 04-09-06 12:04 PM

Soon enough... soon enough...

997 posts to go... :p

bunny 04-09-06 12:11 PM

"eek"

Talking Poker 04-09-06 03:00 PM

Yes, same Lee Jones... the poker player/author Less Jones, who is the cardroom manager for Poker Stars.

Talking Poker 04-09-06 03:04 PM

I thought I had it set for 1000, but maybe not. Sure enough, if you have less than 1000 posts, this is set to "No":
-Can Upload Animated Avatar

The only thing I can think is that jimmy did it before I fine tuned that rule. Thanks for pointing it out though, bunny. It's definitely not fair to everyone else that jimmy would get special treatment, so I'll delete it immediately.

bunny 04-09-06 03:09 PM

No, please don't. I feel bad enough for mentioning it. No let him have it. Please. :o

edit: TalkingPoker, why delete it now. If he's had it this long and no one seems to mind him having it, just let him be.

thewho89 04-13-06 11:15 PM

Hello TalkingPoker,

I am eighteen years old, a senior in high school, and poker is my dearest love. I used to play only weekly live games with my friends, but i had begun to grow tired of playing with the same people and for such a limited amount of time (i also felt bad taking their money on a regular basis :-D) So, i began supplementing my desire to play cards 24/7 by getting my friend (KMB4, member of this blog) to lend me a few dollars to play Pokerstars. I always seemed to build my bank up to $50 then blow it all in .10/.25 cash or $10+1 sngs. Recently i hit my big break winning $450 for my friend in a $10+1 deepstacks tourny on his sn and getting 50% of the profit i earned for him ($170). From there i had about $220 in my account and i was smart putting only 5% of my money into any sit and go, tournament, or cash game. Everything was going fine - i was hovering around $400-$500 - when my interim came and i had a D-, a C+, and some other not so good grades. My parents promptly uninstalled pokerstars from my computer and made me withdraw all of my winnings ($349).

My current pokerstars account balance: $0.00. Now my only way to stay connected to the online poker world without any Pokerstars is by visiting . I enjoy reading about the bad beats people take, the situations TalkingPoker is put under in those difficult 90 man sngs, and all the other random poker talk on this site. Reading people's accounts is the closest thing to actually playing. Since i am not playing i have nothing to post, but i still visit this blog frequently.

My parents are going to let me play Pokerstars again in May when AP exams are finally over, but the problem is i have no way to deposit, and all of my friends are out of Pokerstars money. I know I am probably not the most deserving blogger for this $20, but i feel that if i get the $20 i will be smart with it (play .01/.02 NL and $1.20 sngs) and hopefully build-up a bankroll big enough to safely play those 90 man $50+5 sngs with Talking Poker himself! :-D
