Live Poker Sucks

Seriously, the title says it all. It is SO boring. Full ring is already absymal. Then, everyone takes at least two minutes to make a tough decision. Hurray the fuck up people. Oh yeah, lets not forget the great dealer mistakes either.

This rant is probably influenced by me dropping 2k today at live games, but it still doesn't change the fact that live poker is horrid. If the online poker thing becomes unplayable in the near future, there is no way will I ever become a live pro.

jillaj 01-10-07 01:02 AM

HURRAY SLOW FUCKS!!

Talking Poker 01-10-07 01:31 AM

Oh, come on... you can get in almost 5% as many hands in live play as you can online, assuming you multitable. And don't forget the increased rake!

I still enjoy playing lie FROM TIME TO TIME, but for any serious player, online is where the money is at, IMO. The sheer volume of hands you can play is reason enough to play online, and nothing else can make up for that.

Zybomb 01-10-07 03:07 AM

Eh blow me:D

You guys think online players are bad, but believe me, the loose fish at the live tables are much much worse. I realize you dont get in as many hands, but the amount you can win off bad plays is sick (sicker than most online tables). I mean any time you regularlly have 6-8 players seeing an unraised flop, and 4 players seeing a raised one, you know some ppl r donating money.

As for rake, $5 for a half hour isnt bad IMO

Two examples from tonights play

-I had a player bet into me with A6 on a 356 board in a limp pot $25. I raised to 75 with the nuts (74), he reraised to $425 all in with A6 (the fact that he turned a 5 and rivered a 6 is irrelivant)

- I raise UTG with AA to $30. 1 call, then the BB reraises $100 ontop. I reraise to $300 total (another $170) and this player pushes all in for roughly $900 with QQ

Boobie Lover 01-10-07 10:51 AM

I don't see how hand 2 is badly played unless you are the biggest nit in the world.

Talking Poker 01-10-07 10:57 AM

That happens online too - about 10x as frequently (multitabling, faster games, etc), in fact.

Kurn 01-10-07 11:54 AM

You forgot one thing

Not only that, but when somebody's being a complete ass at your table, you can't just shut off his chat. :D

GeoffM 01-10-07 12:16 PM

LOL.

You also don't earn FPPs that you can use to buy cool merchandise and put towards buyins ;)

Zybomb 01-10-07 01:37 PM

I cant possibly call that bet unless he's beat -- also three betting UTG from a BB reraise light is pretty dangerous IMO. If he thought he was good the line was to call and act on the flop

Boobie Lover 01-10-07 03:14 PM

I know that live poker is softer than online, but those two examples weren't that bad. Search for GimmeNutz on Full Tilt playing 3/6 or 5/10 NL on a nightly basis, he'll probably be there and do something far more retarded than those two examples.

Robbie Robb 01-10-07 03:22 PM

Well....you can....but then security usually gets involved and possibly the police.

Zybomb 01-10-07 03:29 PM

Thanx , Will Do! :D

X-Longshot-X 01-10-07 03:29 PM

I personally like playing live vrs online. Online people picture you as some punk ass kid out to take their money. Live, especially at the weekly game, which is mostly my moms friends from work is nice because they give me pots because of how i look. they dont think little 'ol me could bluff them out of the pot. Also i am able to read people much better live. In the long run there is more money to be made online but your decisions can be much easier sometimes live when you can base it off of tells.

Talking Poker 01-10-07 04:12 PM

You don't get any of your rake back either.

Talking Poker 01-10-07 04:13 PM

That guy redefinied "bad" when I was doing a lot of datamining a couple of months ago. Like, we're talking SCARY bad. He must be absolutely loaded in the real world. Like, a rich doctor or lawyer or something. No normal person can afford to lose as much as he does week in and week out.

The waiting lists for his tables always make me chuckle.

Talking Poker 01-10-07 04:16 PM

If you believe this, nothing else matters. Every other point you could possibly make (other than "it's more social/fun/whatever") is insignificant.

X-Longshot-X 01-10-07 04:17 PM

He isnt a rich doctor in fact he isnt a he at all. I have come to the conclusion that this is the ex wife of a rich doctor or lawyer who has nothing better to do with the alamoney other than pad another players bankroll :D

X-Longshot-X 01-10-07 04:19 PM

If you are playing for a living, then yes nothing else matters, But if you are in a situation like myself where i play pretty much recreationally than you should take other things into account. Plus i only Like live better, if i got serious serious about poker then i know online is the better choice

Boobie Lover 01-10-07 04:57 PM

Live is only tolerable when you are playing with people that you know, and becomes only slightly amusing if alcohol is involved. Regular live casino action though still resolves to tedious boredom.

Robbr25 01-10-07 06:19 PM

I like both.
Mainly because reading people live is challenging.
I like that part of live poker that you miss(mostly) online.

lightfungus 01-10-07 09:48 PM

Maybe because I suck at poker online or something, but I made a majority of my winnings in poker this year in live play. My reads are much more accurate, and the play is much much worse IMO. Zybomb is correct.

PShabi 01-11-07 01:35 AM

This may sound harsh, but your mom must work with some fat sons of bitches.

sjay2k 01-11-07 10:27 AM

zomg i just tried live poker

5/10 half-pot at the local casino

so so so silly

trip report

first hand i have KQ and raise to 20 (apparently u can only min raise in half pot preflop?) and get called by 3 players.

flop JT9 rainbow. I half-pot and get called by two players.

turn 2. I half-pot and get called by one player.

river 6. I half-pot, and the other player (plebbish looking middle-age guy) tanks for like five minutes and declares that he's folding; disgustedly tabling pocket 5s (what?). he then proceeds to rave on about how he "can't win a hand" etc.

each hand takes a few minutes and i proceed to get trashed exceptionally quickly (perhaps evident in this post still). beers and daquiris (sp?).

i get no playable cards while the table fish proceed to dump about 5k to the other young guy on the table (who is pretty bad in his on right, btw).

i raise KcTc on the button, nearly the whole table calls. flop QcJc6d. sb leads, bb calls, a few others call and i half-pot. only the bb calls. turn is a 7h and it goes check-check. river 7s and the bb leads out for half-pot. i fold and he shows 89o (what?).

the dealer then squanders 15 minutes of my life trying to work out how to use the dealing machine. more beers consumed here i believe.

i raise 88 on the button and the blinds call. flop 852 rainbow. check, check, i bet half-pot and the bb calls. turn T- the bb check-calls another half-pot bet. river K- the bb check-folds to me, flinging 23o to the muck, mumbling about AK and luck. i can hardly stop myself laughing because i'm so so drunk at this point.

i raise J9s from the cutoff against two limpers and get called five times (obv). flop J83 (two diamonds). checked to me, i half-pot, and utg (terrible, terrible lagfish) calls. the turn is an offsuit 9 and utg min check-raises me. i go allin for not much more (maybe 200 into a 1300 pot i think). he thinks for three minutes, uttering nonsense like "i think we have the same hand" and then, seemingly reluctantly, calls with QTo (nice call, sometimes i fold the nuts personally) and stacks me.

i get more drunk and go home. i'm never playing live poker again. the people are so obnoxious/borderline-retarded, the game is absurdly slow and alcohol impedes my pokering abilities.

lightfungus 01-11-07 10:38 AM

That stuff entertains me, but that form of NL seems like a headache. Just imagine if you were paying NL with them...! Oh, and thats why I don't drink when I play...

sjay2k 01-11-07 10:40 AM

also the lucky young player tells me he normally plays $20 sngs on the internet and i think his buyin represented about 1/2 of his bankroll. well done

Zybomb 01-11-07 01:39 PM

SJay Hell of a report. LMAO. The funny thing is you will see crazy shit like this all the time when you play Live

On a different note, one other thing I forgot to mention in my response is the benefits of reads

- What kind of chips they put in

- How they put their chips in

- Whether they announce their bet ("Fifty") or just place chips in

- When raising how they raise either 1) Announcing raise while throwing in a call, then going back to raise 2) announcing raise and throwing all the chips in at once 3) just throwing in all the chips with no verbal action.... alot of the time one of these three ways shows strength, the other is an informational raise

In addition to actual facial expressions body language etc. I've made several calls (and laydowns) live that I know for a fact that I wouldn't be able to make on the internet.

- The benefit of running business (HUGE to limit varience)

and more.

Random Note: I had another solid session last night both live and online, bringing me into the positive online for the year (finally) and cruisin along 4 figures overall for the year..

Van_Broked 01-11-07 07:50 PM

I wondered about these kinds of tells. Do you find there is a general pattern Zy or does it vary per individual?

Zybomb 01-11-07 09:22 PM

It varies per individual -- and some people do the same thing everytime (i.e always just throw in a bunch of chips) BUT I can make a fairly good GENERAL analysis

- When a player announces his bet he is usually strong (if he was weak he normally wouldnt want to try and give away anything in his voice, so he just wouldn't say anything). When a player just puts in chips it could be either, but if he regularly does both, he's often weaker when he doesn't announce his bet

- When raising, if a player calls first and then goes back for raising chips, he is usually strong (assuming he does both). If he raises with just one motion, it is usually mixed

- When raising, if a player announces the total bet as opposed to how much he raises, he is often weak (assuming he does both) and is saying the total bet because it is a higher number which sounds more intimidating and thus more likely to enduce a fold. If they announce the smaller number (how much more ontop they are raising) it's often strength for the same reason (it makes the bet seem less)

- When a player uses smaller denominations of chips for his bet, it usually means he is weak and is using more chips to make the bet seem psychologically bigger

- As for how they put their chips in, its hard to describe, but how they release their chips, the force in which they throw them in and and their timing, can all give clues about the strength of their hand

Again, these vary from individual to individual and sometimes don'tmean anything -- but if I had to generalize more often than not, this (above) is how I would do so

New Guy 01-11-07 09:37 PM

At the casinos here you do earn fpp points .They are not called that but you can use them for food or whatever.Pretty cool!

Talking Poker 01-11-07 11:10 PM

Remind me to never play half-pot poker. Actually, no reminder necessary.

Also, remind me to send Zy loads of false tells the next time I see him. Actually, that's not necessary either, because his "reads" on me would be mostly wrong anyway. :)

Zybomb 01-11-07 11:48 PM

No need for reads, I'll just outplay you :D

And yea half pot poker is extremely extremely gay sounding, i dont plan on ever playing that game either

Spuddy 01-11-07 11:51 PM

Live poker is easier to pick up a read on a player, with body reactions, more talking, less talking, etc.

Online you don't get that.... which makes it a bit harder.

Plus, live play is a lot less easier to NOT tilt (been there! LOL!)

Zybomb 01-19-07 04:05 PM

Im boosting this thread back to the top -- with undeniable proof that live poker has worse players than online.

If anyone can show me instances which top these 3 I will be severely impressed.

These three hands occured within 90 minutes or so at the same table

HAND 1:

Player goes all in for his last $111 dollars (a $106 raise) 5 callers.

Flop comes 4:c: 3:c: 4:h:

Player first to act MOVES ALL IN for $1700 into a dry side pot with 98o none of which was a club. Everyone folds. All in player turns over A4o for trips and scoops the pot

HAND 2:

Player raises preflop to $25, 2 callers. Flop comes K:s: 7:s: 8:s:

Player bets $50, PFR raises to $200 next player smooth calls, bettor folds.

Turn A:s: . PFR checks, other player checks.

River 2:d: . PFR checks then TURNS OVER HIS HAND K7. Opponent looks ta his hand and then bets $200

Now I understand maybe he is making a move bc he cant beat K7, so maybe I can justify a call somehow.... still I fold this.... does this player? No no no HE RAISES ALL IN FOR $300 MORE! Opponent calls with 5:s: 4:s:

HAND 3:

UTG player moves all in for $300 with 55 with $5 and $5 blinds. SB calls with KK and busts him

If this does not offer undeniable proof then I don't know what does

melioris 01-19-07 04:17 PM

This one wins, I think

Talking Poker 01-19-07 05:46 PM

Those are some "strange" plays, yes. But have you ever considered that the idiots you play with would be just as bad (if not worse!) if they were playing online???

Maybe you have only proved that New Yorkers are stupid, and not necessarily live poker players.

Zybomb 01-19-07 05:49 PM

These are the same players that say "it's impossible to win online, the play is too tight" and refuse to play online :D

Eh, maybe it's NYers  ... certaintly not saying there arent some sharks in the clubs as well, bc there definately are.... but they are at least equaled out by super donks

Boobie Lover 01-19-07 06:23 PM

Hand 2 was funny, and I doubt I can beat it.

Spuddy 01-20-07 12:26 AM

Call me crazy, but don't you want to play bad players?

Talking Poker 01-20-07 12:56 AM

Hey crazy,

When did he say that he didn't? In fact, I think he was saying just that and using this as a case in support of Live Poker.

Zybomb 01-20-07 05:11 AM

Bingo!

The K7 genius, after busting out stated that he was about to go down to AC for the night -- I tried convincing him to stay for a while before leaving -- it worked nd he stayed another hour -- but I never got involved in a pot with him unfortunately
