this isnt omaha boy.....

Talking Poker 07-19-05 12:00 PM

It's going to be single elimination. For simplicity sake, I think we should go with one round matches, at least in the earlier rounds... but if you guys would rather do best of 3, we can do that too... I just figure it going to be enough trouble getting people to coordinate their schedules for one match, let alone 2 or 3... Then again, they might not take that long. I'm ok with doing this either way. What do you all think?

Aequitas58 07-19-05 12:07 PM

I vote for 2/3 just because it reduces the luck factor.

BlibbityBlabbity 07-19-05 12:14 PM

I like the best of three as well. We do have all month to get this done. Most would play all three at once, I would think instead of trying to organize 2-3 seperate times.

Talking Poker 07-19-05 12:25 PM

I agree with you guys. Unless anyone strongly objects and thinks a single match is the way to go, we'll do best of 3...

I'm still waiting to hear back from the poker sites. The clock is ticking.

bdawg31 07-19-05 12:58 PM

always lurking

I have spent a lot of time lurking - not much posting. I have a few non-sense posts, but nothing substantial. I do find myself coming back day after day - not just for the poker advice - but for the DRAMA that always pops up in this strings.

drewjax 07-19-05 03:29 PM

I like it all so far. 2 out of 3 is probably best.
TP and Aeq. both had good ideas to spice it up. Calcuttas are great sometimes, especially with golf tournaments! Bracketology is the thing now though, I'd probably lean that way. Easier too.

Aequitas58 07-19-05 03:54 PM

Put your thoughts in the "additional idea" thread. We're working out the extras there.

nflchad 07-19-05 10:28 PM

I'd like to play if we need a few more people to fill out the bracket.

Talking Poker 07-19-05 10:40 PM

Everyone who wants to will get to play... some people might have to play an extra round or some might get byes.... We'll see how it shakes out.

Maybe Blibbity will make us a new list soon, so we can see where we stand with entries :)

Still 5 more to 32...

junYUN 07-20-05 02:17 AM

im in

junYUN 07-20-05 02:23 AM

and id much rather do single matches.. i think it'll be tough to coordinate.. let alone play 2 of 3... it's more "exciting" with single matches.

BrianSwa 07-20-05 09:31 AM

hmmm

I say 2/3 but have to be played all at the same time.

Gordogg 07-20-05 08:28 PM

I prefer single elimination, just like the NCAA basketball tourney.

Talking Poker 07-20-05 08:33 PM

It's going to be single elimination. The only question is if each heads up match will be one tourney or a best of 3.

I like the best of 3 idea, myself, but again, for simplicity sake this first time around, I think we should go with just one match with the winner advancing.

Zybomb 07-20-05 11:40 PM

Im in favor for best of three. I dont think time will be an issue, because all games will be played 1 after another, so worrying about two different times to play is avoided.

Talking Poker 07-21-05 12:34 AM

Here's what I'm thinking... I'll take input, of course, but I think this is a pretty good idea:

(Assuming 32 players)
The first two rounds (32-->16-->8) will be single matches. This is when we'll have the most people playing and the toughest time coordinating schedules and such. The third round (8 players, 4 matches) will be best of 3. The semifinals (4 players, 2 matches) will be a best of 5 series... and then the grand finale, the championship, will be a best of 7 series.

What do you think? Originally I was going to say 2/3 for the final 4 and 3/5 for the finals, but I think this is even better. By the time we get that far, hopefully the people left will be pretty serious about it and won't mind making time to play. And by doing it like this, the winner will really deserve to be there, having won 11 Heads up Tourneys!

I'd also like to have prizes for at least the final 2 players, but more likely the final 4. I'm hoping out TBD poker site will kick in a little bit of cash for us. Talks are in progress now.

This is going to be very cool!

Aequitas58 07-21-05 12:35 AM

Yea I agree.

I can see how TP is trying to avoid complications, but the "best of three" matches should take place one-after-another. Since we're only dealing w/ T1500 (possibly less) and the blinds increase quickly, I don't think it'll be too much of a time constraint.

I like how everyone else is giving input - we have 20+ people signed up. C'mon guys...

Gordogg 07-21-05 02:20 AM

Wrong wording. I meant one game played winner goes on, not best of three. It's not a huge deal to me though, I'd enjoy this tournament regardless. My freetime is abundant now as well, so no prob.

I really like TP's idea of increasing the number of games played between the opponents the deeper it gets in the tourney. We're not all TP, Kurn, ChumpFish, etc... Give an underdog a chance to score an upset in the first round or two. IMO I think it would add excitement to the tourney.

BlibbityBlabbity 07-21-05 08:23 AM

Round one (32-16) - best of 3 (but a single match here would be "ok")
Round two (16-8) - best of 3
Round three (8-4) - best of 3
Round four (4-2) - best of 5
Final (2-1) - best of 5

This is what I "vote" for....I like the increasing of matches but personally, I think best of 7 is a little overkill. I think best of three determines the better player "pretty well" and best of 5 pretty much seals it.

BTW....

Still 4 more to 32...

BlibbityBlabbity 07-21-05 08:31 AM

Also, regarding how the matches will be played (if there are more than one per round).....

I would suggest that the minimum to win (2 for best of three, 3 for best of five, etc, etc) be played in one sitting, then if there needs to be a tiebreaker(s) there is the option of scheduling that for another time.

Still need to know how these will be set up. Are they just going to all be set up and the two players sign in whenever they want (password protected), or will you have to have it each match set up by support before you can play? Think this still needs to be given some thought once the site is chosen (or as part of the selection process).....

Talking Poker 07-21-05 03:44 PM

This is the part that is still in the works. I'm hoping people will be able to set up their own matches, and neither support nor I will need to take part in it at all.

BlibbityBlabbity 07-21-05 04:07 PM

Agreed...

BTW, one thing to confirm if PokerHost is still in the running is that this prize pool will be exempt from their "winnings prior to deposit" rules. Typically, you have to deposit and then unlock any money won prior to your deposit (freerolls, or any other promotional money). Their current rules only count $1/$2 and higher games toward unlocking bonuses/promo money. This might suck for some people if they win and don't want to play those limits to try to get their winnings.

From what I understand, if you deposit THEN win money all is ok and it is yours to do what you want with. So, it might be better for people to make $30 deposits in case they win???

Just an FYI in the dcision-making process.....

MAYHEM45 07-24-05 04:11 AM

Oh yeah, just to let you know, Ive been reading this forum for about 3 months, just never anything good to contribute. Im mainly an SNG player, so I may have to start posting some of my strategies and problem hands and DISCUSS it up with you guys. I love all the personalities on here, and I think im ready to join you guys.

Thanks Pshabi for the welcome!
