Home Depot car FTW!!!

PS - for all you snow lovers... I'm in the keys right now (typing this on my BB), went deep sea fishing yesterday and we're going snorkeling off a reef today... 82 degrees and sunny each day... so, once again, Florida FTW!!!!

we got 30-36 inches of snow on the ground, it is 34˚F and raining right now (should turn into about 1-2 inch layer of inch on the ground) and then we are expecting 6-8 inches of fresh snow when it turns to snow later today.

So we got bad weather, a depressed industrial city in post-industrial America, and big-boned women of Northern European stock that drink like fish and hump like bunnies. I am not feeling a lot of love for my newly adopted home city. Although I did go last night into the shittiest part of town with a priest friend of mine and hang out at this awesome BBQ place. Good food, great people. The whole place was laughing with us and tell jokes. One of the workers came up to us mid-meal and said "You are the first whites that have eaten in here in 6 months". We were told to come back, but not to tell our friends as too many whites would ruin the place.

Hanging out with a priest gets you into a lot of places you otherwise would feel uncomfortable.

1. I don't really care one bit about NASCAR

2. If I were offered tickets to the Daytona 500 I'd be there in a heartbeat.

:D

Any spectator sport that involves t-shirt cannons is worth going to.

Fun day.

Favorite part: The flyover before the race.

Random fact: The Dayton 500 triples the population of Daytona Beach. Go figure.

Crazy coincidence: Over 200,000 people at the track today and we run into the ONE person that my friend Lynn wanted to run into. And this wasn't just any person... it was Carl Edwards (driver - #99), who she went to Jr. High with. He remembered her and gave her a big hug. Did I mention that this was under the backstretch grandstands, where you would pretty much expect to bump into ZERO drivers? It's even way more random than I've explained, but still... this is like a million to one shot.

It was a great race. I think the new cars are going to provide for some great racing this season. While it seems the general consensus amongst the drivers is that they are tougher to drive they definitely seem to be far more forgiving. There were a LOT of bumps today that should have caused 'The Big One'.

I was extremely impressed by the entire pre-show. It seemed a really fitting way of celebrating 50 years.

I'm still jealous as hell that you got to go though! :)

The two tracks I'd like to visit soon (as in next couple/few years) are Daytona (duh!) and Kansas.

Talking Poker 02-18-08 01:27 AM

FWIW, the only other place I've seen a race is Charlotte. While the Daytona 500 is the freaking Daytona 500 and I'm really glad I got to go, I like Charlotte better (both as a venue and as a racing style).

I'd like to see a race at one of the short tracks someday. I think that would be way cool.

What the hell is Carl Edwards doing under the backstretch grandstands?

And...the flyover is always the best part of NASCAR races, baseball opening days, fourth of july games, etc.

That's the question of the day, believe me. We just happened to be walking from one area to another when he went flying by in a suped-up golf cart type thing (he was actually driving) - right through the big crowd of people, lead by a police motorcycle escort. Lynn's jaw dropped, so we quickly followed to where he parked. He was already gone by the time we got there, but we waited around and not 10 minutes later, he was back.

My best guess is that he made a quick appearance for the Office Depot people (his main sponsor) up in one of the backstretch luxury boxes or something. Who knows? Didn't see one other driver back there, and certainly didn't expect to.

Nah. The whole atmosphere would be worth going. I would bet there's a certain amount of flashing females.
