NL Playoff Race ...

Un-frickin'-believable. Four days left in the season. Exactly ONE NL playoff berth has been decided. Here's what we have so far.

The Mets (93-65) have already clinched and don't seem to give a shit about too much right now. In fact, word from my reliable sources is that a lucky row of fans will get to play the fourth, fifth and sixth innings of a game this Sunday. Now, THAT's fan appreciation.

The Fightins' (83-75) currently trail the Dodgers by one game. Seeing how they were exactly one pitch away tonight from blowing their third game in three days, I have to wonder if they have the mettle to, you know, actually beat two teams (Washington and Florida) with worse records than them.

St. Louis (81-76) is currently being compared to every shitkicker team that ever played. And by the way, I REALLY don't by this Pujols for MVP stuff. The Cardinals were a preseason pick by some to reach the Series. Now, they're huffing and puffing their way home. Not to sound like an uninformed homer (which, tragically, I am), but Ryan Howard has basically taken a team that was written off at the trade deadline and put them closer to the playoffs than anyone would have imagined. Oh, I love St. Louis, by the way. No disrespect.

Houston (80-78) really shouldn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting to the playoffs. Come to think of it, a snowball shouldn't have much chance in Houston, anyway. Fucking St. Louis. The good news is, it's looking like the wild-card berth ain't comin' out of the Central, so whoever wins this race is likely getting just one spot.

San Diego (85-73) and Los Angeles (84-74) keep flip-flopping the lead in the West. Honestly, I don't give a shit who wins here, just as long as the second-place team has a worse record than the Phils.

OK, so with four days left, here's the schedules that matter:

Philadelphia:
R-at Washington
F-at Florida
S-at Florida
S-at Florida

St. Louis:
R-Milwaukee
F-Milwaukee
S-Milwaukee
S-Milwaukee
M?-San Francisco (makeup)

Houston:
R-at Pittsburgh
F-at Atlanta
S-at Atlanta
S-at Atlanta

San Diego:
R-at Arizona
F-at Arizona
S-at Arizona
S-at Arizona

Los Angeles:
R-at Colorado
F-at San Francisco
S-at San Francisco
S-at San Francisco

Five teams, 21 games. All but four on the road. Every single game against a team with a losing record. As it stands now, New York, St. Louis and San Diego are the division winners. LA gets the wild card. Houston and Philly are on the outside looking in.

Now, here's my favorite scenario:

1.) Philly goes 2-2 over the stretch. St. Louis finds its stride and goes 3-2. Houston catches up, however, and rolls to 4-0. San Diego and LA fall apart, with the former going 0-4 and the latter 1-3. All five teams finish with identical 85-77 records, leaving the league with an utter logistical nightmare.

I really want to see the cardinals meltdown, not because I hate them but because it would be one of the biggest meltdowns ever.

they were UP 8.5 games (aleast) last week and lose 7 in a row while the stros won 7 in a row.

Ohhh.... I like this very much!

I dropped some $$ on the Phils to win the World Series last week - nice odds - so here's hoping they can get into the playoffs first.

I was going to drop some money on the Mets, but they are one of the favorites so the odds were just not good enough. Yes I am a Mets fan !! Go METS !!!
