User Reputation...

Today starts a new year, so I thought this would be a good time to add a new feature to TP.com: User Reputation.

I'm honestly not exactly sure how it works, but in theory, after a while, you will be able to tell what other people think of certain posters based on a little green bar in the header of each of their posts.

There are rules and limits and different users have different power (based on time being a member, post count, their own reputation, etc, etc), but basically, all you have to do is click on the little scale looking thing at the top of a person's posts. You won't want to use this for EVERY post you read (I think you can only do 10 per day), but if a post is exceptionally good, you should click on it and say that you "Approve" of it. If it's exceptionally bad or annoying, you should click and say that you "Disapprove" of it. It's that simple.

In time, the results might be useful.

If anyone has an experience with this elsewhere or any suggestions (I can tweak all sorts of things, including the stupid default titles for each level), speak up.

If this turns out to be stupid, I'll turn it back off, but let's give it a whirl for January and see if we think it might end up being useful.

Hawt 01-01-06 06:48 PM

Reputation is used on another message board I frequent. It is pretty useful, especially when you're new to the forums because you can tell who is full of shit and who isn't. I think it would be extremely useful for this forum since it is centered around getting advice about your game. If someone responds to one of your posts but has negative reputation (red) then someone like TP with a bunch of posts and a lot of positive reputation (green) you know what advice is probably the advice you should be listening too. It is also good for your posts. I know at the other forum I posted on, It really taught me a lot. There is nothing like making a post and getting a couple berating comments (the users on the other forum are BRUTAL) and a negative reputation to get your head on straight and have you make sure that your posts really add something positive to the forum.

I approved of this post :)

Awesome, starting off the New Year strong. Took about a week and a half off from playing poker, and bought (with a giftcard!)/read Low Limit Hold 'Em by Lee Jones. I digested that, patched some (of many) leaks. and played a little today. And now to top it all off I am on a "distinguished road". Whoo.

Nikita 01-02-06 12:24 AM

I kinda like the reputation idea. For the exact reasons Hawt mentioned in his first post.

One piece of feedback for you. Is it possible to get some sorta running tally of how "red" or how "green" someone is? Sure I'm green right now (hopefully, this doesn't change  :D ), but is it for one post? Ten? I think you get the idea. That way, like in Hawt's example, when soliciting feedback, the more green someone is, the better their advice is likely to be. As well, the more red someone is, the more likely they are to be someone just looking for free money (or just a regular jerk, but I'm thinking the first reason will get the red flag more often :) )

EDIT: Well apparently it sorta does this already. I didn't realize hovering over the box would pull up a comment like "on the distinguished road". Do they change at the same levels as the titles under our names?

Talking Poker 01-02-06 01:07 AM

I left them all set to their predefined levels, whichis are pretty lame, if you ask me. I'm thinking of changing them to just say what number the person has exceeded instead of those cutesy little phrases.

As for the amount of green or red, I believe more bars will appear over time. Right now, we're all stuck on one bar because we just started the whole rating system. If everyone can remember to add feedback from time to time (especially over the first few days), we should be on the right track soon...

Zybomb 01-02-06 05:15 AM

who the hell put this guy in the green? :D

Edit: Hey Im not on the distinguished road anymore -- its sez i will be famou soon enough    :D

rookette22 01-02-06 09:24 AM

Says I'm an 'unknown quantity at the moment' :( pfff.......what do they know

Would be nice to see who gave us the green light! :)

HEwong 01-02-06 12:11 PM

i want a green light lol

kmb13592 01-02-06 03:14 PM

I think what you did is really cool, although i'm finding out i'm not wanted here, lol. I've got negative reputation points.

Talking Poker 01-02-06 10:06 PM

I don't think it means you're not wanted... just that you haven't proven yourself with your contributions yet. I'm sure you can turn it around soon enough.

HEwong 01-02-06 10:11 PM

ouch. tp i would prefer my last ranking lol

Talking Poker 01-02-06 11:21 PM

Hey, you're green now.... someone must have a read a post of yours that they liked. In fact, I think it may have been me.

HEwong 01-02-06 11:23 PM

woot woot. thanks tp lol

rookette22 01-03-06 12:01 AM

This is the message I received when trying to disapprove of yet another one of your posts.

"You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Talking Poker again."

Good save TP.

Talking Poker 01-03-06 12:03 AM

Are you serious? You're giving me negative reputation? LOL... Yeah, cause I'm really "bad" for this community.

It's set up so you have to hit 10 people before you can rehit someone.

And remember rook, this is supposed to be a useful tool - not a popularity contest or a way to make a point or settle a grudge.

rookette22 01-03-06 12:08 AM

Hmmm... am I not allowed to give you a 'negative' rep on a post you made? If you said something in one of your posts that I disliked is that not reason enough to give you a neg. rep? Maybe I'm confused or on 'meds' or something, but that's what I thought this rep approval - disapproval thing was for. I mean I got more than my fair share of disapproved lights. 15 to be exact. Tell me what's that mean? Does it mean you, TP could hit as many as you want? Just a question. How much can you hit?

Edit: btw I don't much care about this approval - disapproval thing. Started out as an unknown quantity (whatever that means) anyway.

So what's the red light mean? As you mentioned above, you said something about 'being bad for the community. Is that what it means?

I am Feeling the love....

I must not have read the whole thread,I will only play in tourney where the site holds the buy-ins.such as stars but pokerroom would do a private $5 plus .50 buy in.

Talking Poker 01-03-06 12:20 AM

Yes, that is correct. I just found it amusing.

If you are giving me (and everyone else) positive rep on the 1000s of posts that have been made that you do think are worthwhile, then yes, I would expect you to give me negative rep on the ones you "disapprove of." But the fact that you are trying to do it to me multiple times (enough that you got the error you posted about) seems a bit shady. Seems to me that you are being a big baby and are out to get me or something....

And the whole point of "reputation" is so new users can see who is worth listening to and who they should beware of. And the fact that you think *I* am someone they should beware of, yes, I find that flat out hilarious, and I'm sure many others do as well...

But as you like to saw, "w/e."

rookette22 01-03-06 12:24 AM

Be honest ok? Can you honestly say that you didn't give me more than one negative rep?

And I'm not doing it to get back at you. I'm doing it cus I didn't like your replies to some of my posts and this is an easy way to do it instead of posting you my reply to your post replies. *Wouldn't want you to waste another 45mins on my account.*

Zybomb 01-03-06 12:33 AM

did someone give rook brians meds?

 :D :p

Talking Poker 01-03-06 12:37 AM

Yes, I can honestly say that. Your little light was red when I opened the thread.

I guess it's up to each individual, but IMO, Negative rep shouldn't be for disagreements. It should be when you truly disapprove of a post - ie, SPAM, random insults, major overreactions, and that sort of thing... not for when you don't agree with someone's well supported and thought out point of view.

Hawt 01-03-06 12:39 AM

I don't know if it is possible, but I think it would be nice to make leaving a comment with your neg/pos rep would be nice. That way you can tell someone what you did/didn't like about their post so they know what to change in the future.

Zybomb 01-03-06 12:40 AM

I back this 100%

rookette22 01-03-06 12:42 AM

You wondered if I was on meds or something??? Guess I can't have my own opinion on certain subjects without you thinking I'm either 'crazy' and need help or on 'meds', huh? Sry, but you deserved the negative approval on that one. Don't much like you insinuating it over and over either.
