When to move up in comfort and style...
 

So, as not to hijack Aeq's thread any more than the fishdoctor example did already...

Assume you are bankrolled for $2/$4 limit and you currently play .50/$1.

Now, in a strict bankroll sense you should move up to 2/4 and get started raking in the big bucks, but...

1) You are a consistant winner at .50/1 and you know you make a few bad calls here and there. At .50/1 this doesn't hurt too much as most of the other players make more mistakes than you do, keeping you a winning player at that level.

2) You can assume that as you move up players will be making fewer mistakes and approaching the level of play you currently are playing at, making you a slight winner, or break-even player (or maybe, worst case a losing player).

3) You are not unhappy with the constant small win rate, but would at some point like to move up when you fell like you could easily beat the next level up.

Questions:

Do you continue to try to figure out the holes in your game before moving up?

TP mentioned in the other thread that it was ok to move up "knowing you might be a losing player for a while". It seems backwards to me to stay at that losing level to plug the holes in your game, but, Is it possible (worthwhile) to move back down a level and get your game in better shape before taking another stab at it.

What kind of limits should you set for yourself if you are willing to take a loss "for a while"? Set a maximum amount that you can lose before you have to go back down? # of hands as a test?

im gonna try to answer this out of my normal idiot answers lets see how I do.

I say yes move up but be prepared to lose a little before you get comfortable at the level and if you feel like you cant handle the loss move back down. Or maybe move down to 1/2 if you find you are losing more then you would like at 2/4. If you are enjoying .50/1.00 though I say never move up until you start to find it boring.

I have never understood why you feel "bored" playing a certain limit. I can understand a limit not being worth your time, but poker is poker and a BB is a BB no matter if it is $1 or $200. Maybe it is related to the players who sit at a 5c/10c limit table with $500, I never got that either....
