Etiquette?????

3 players in hand, one is all-in (super micro stack).

I hold Q7o

flop 36K check-check
turn 9 check-check
river 7 check-I min bet.

Now, this was a very strange homegame, so please comment specifically on the ettiquette of my bet. Am I being an ass? (the EV of the play is a diff issue)

Robbr25 10-17-08 11:49 PM

How big is the side pot, if 0 then yes you are a nit and if you lose to the short stack a big nit. What does the bet really get you there ? Wouldn't you rather check it down to knock someone out?

Invigilator 10-17-08 11:52 PM

terminolgy clarification: Are you equating nit with asshole? I ask because nit has strategy and mathimatical connotations.

Reel Deal 10-18-08 12:03 AM

Why was it a "strange home game"??

Invigilator 10-18-08 12:08 AM

Wide, WWIIIIIIIDEEEE range of abilities. There are a number of nonstandard strategies that pay off against certain players. As a result of my usually aggressive play, I tend to have a loose and wild image among this group.

sjay2k 10-18-08 01:34 AM

no. i don't get it?

JDMcNugent7 10-18-08 06:52 AM

i dn but it seems like a dumbass bet

Invigilator 10-18-08 09:18 AM

The other live player was Oceanwaves. She had a pocket pair that was smaller than my 7's. She paid off the min bet and got very, very pissed off at me.

Invigilator 10-18-08 09:20 AM

absolutely. Definitely not +EV.

JDMcNugent7 10-18-08 10:47 AM

actually i thought u had Q high. my bad. not that bad prob

jillaj 10-18-08 11:47 AM

Why?

Invigilator 10-18-08 12:06 PM

Said I was being mean and that I should have just checked behind, since the real value in the hand was knocking out the other player.

jillaj 10-18-08 12:25 PM

Being mean? If I was friends with this person I would tell them to stfu and play better. If I wasn't I would tell them to stfu and make sure to value bet them at all times.

Also the real value might have been knocking the player out till someone called with I'm guessing 4's or 5's on that board.

Robbr25 10-18-08 12:39 PM

By nit I don't mean a word as strong as asshole.
Isn't it better to knock someone out of the tourney than get one extra bet ?
In this case she had a worse hand than you and I assume the short stack had nothing ? So it worked out.
But I would be really pissed if you pushed me out and my hand could have taken the short stack out.

I really don't understand why you need to make a min bet here.

jillaj 10-18-08 12:40 PM

What hand can win and won't call a min bet?

Robbie Robb 10-18-08 01:26 PM

Hehe. Perhaps it should be pointed out at this junction that Oceanwives is also known as Mrs. Invigilator...

Invigilator 10-18-08 02:51 PM

The bet definitely does not have any +EV in general. Deep in my home game means deep into a case of Blue Light too, so that's part of the explaination.

There really isn't a hand that beats me that I am going to drive out by betting. HOEWEVER, there are so few hands that I beat that would call. The only reason she called is she knows I try to bluff her more than I do the average person.

Final clarification point... when I bet the 7, am I making the statement "I hit the 7" or is it a more general statement of a I have part of the flop?

MAYHEM45 10-18-08 03:29 PM

lol invig is sleeping on the couch.

Robbr25 10-18-08 03:33 PM

It is true that there can't be to many hands that would fold for a min bet.
Only scenario I could come up with is 9x, and the all in guy has 88.
You fold out the 9x and lose to the 88.
I don't know, I would check it down.

Invigilator 10-18-08 04:56 PM

def. I am gonna blame the beer on this one. ;)

Zybomb 10-20-08 05:03 PM

Um ARE YOU FUCKIN SERIOUS?

It's poker, and you are betting your hand for value if you feel you will be called by less, or as a bluff if u think opponent is dumb enough to fold a hand worse than yours.

Where in the ethics rules is it not ok to WIN or lightly bet a hand when someone else is all in?

If the third player got very very pissed at me I'd laugh in their face and tell them to deal with it.... if they couldn't Id tell them maybe they should play go fish

Is it bad etiquette to bluff this person also? Or how about even further, bet any hand at all?

See first line again

Robbr25 10-20-08 06:04 PM

I am not saying it is bad etiquette I am saying at that point with that weak of a hand it is nit picky.

jillaj 10-20-08 07:20 PM

In that case I would be in the dog house for a while cause I don't know when to stfu.
