New Poker Books...
 

I don't make enough time to read. I have quite a collection of poker books, but sadly, I've only gotten through a fraction of them. I own all sorts of books - from advanced ones that I actually learn from to more beginner style books where I am more curious to see how the author explains thing to entertainment books (Doyle's stories, Barry's book, etc). I've also got a couple on poker and psychology, tells, zen. Yeah, I have a lot of poker books. Someday I hope to find the time to get through them all, but I really need to finish (start?) editing Zybomb's book first. :rolleyes:

Anyhoo..... the point is, I haven't ordered a poker book in a long time. I knew I wanted HOH3 though, so I went to Amazon to get it, through the TP.com of course! While browsing around, I found a number of new and interesting looking books, including:

- a must have, if it's anything like the first two.

- Fischman wrote a book. Definitely looking forward to reading his take on things.

- The new Sklansky/Miller book that I've heard good things about.

- I've been meaning to pick this one up for a long time.

I also ordered two of the WPT series of books (Antonio's and Lindgren's). And then I pre-ordered Phil Gordon's Little Blue Book (I have the Green but haven't read it yet) and a book that I am VERY excited about that I didn't even know was being written:

- Negreanu's book. This sounds like a MUST HAVE. I'm really looking forward to digging into this.

I heard from ActionJeff (namedropper!) that the new NLHE book by Sklansky is awesome. This along with HOH3 are my next two purchases.

For those who have accumulated FPP points, I think HOH3 is only 1500 FPP. That might be an inflated price (aren't all FPP items inflated?) but I'll have to check ebay before anything.

Kill Phil is supposed to be very unique for NLHE tournaments, but I have heard mixed reviews. I hear that it advocates very aggressive push-fold strategy, but it is reported that people have started seeing instant success by following it. Who knows.

I didn't know Fischman or Negreanu had books out. Something to look into.

I'm about 1/2 through this one right now. Very very aggro. It isn't very heavy into post flop, turn play. In fact - I don't think I've ready anything about turn play in it yet. Its all about putting your opponet to a decision for all his chips. It has different categories of hands (looser than HoH) and based on position, when to push pre-flop. For example, AA would warrant a push from any position regardless of chip stack, tourney stage, etc. A10 would warrant a push from the button with limpers (something like that).

The basic underlying philosophy of it is this: Your not as good as your opponents, if you try and outplay them, you will loose. You should not have to make any post flop decisions unless you were the BB and did not push. Push early and put them to the decision for all their chips.

They do get into some advanced "kill phil" techniques that advocate pot sized bets rather than pushes but I'm just getting to that now.

Entertaining read though.

This is an interesting theory, but realistically, it will only get you so far. IMO.

I'm about 1/3 of the way through HoH III and its worth every penny so far. The entire book is a workbook based upon the play of hands, some hypothetical, some real (some we've seen on TV). each hand is a series of questions with multiple choice answers, then an thorough discussion of the approach to each play, and a score for each choice. he even points out his own mistakes in hands he's played. IMO it is the best book yet on post flop NL tourney play.
