TP league(s)

We really should get a league or two developing at least. Maybe some kind of MTT or ring game league... I think we could set it up using win rates and ROI%s so that it could span many of the readers' bankrolls... I was just wondering cuz I think you guys have talked about this before, if you had any ideas on how you were going to do it... if not give me a day or two and I bet I could come up with a few solid guidelines as how to do it, I already have a few ideas.

We have had this many times before, but it always turns out to be a waste of time. We play like 25 events, and like 15 members play the first one, 10 play the 2nd, and then 3 play the next 26 until the final event when 20 show up. So the leaderboard usually reflects how little of a social life each person has.

Got 1st in last league! SHIP IT BITCHES

Nikita 07-13-07 07:42 AM

We usually run the league for tournaments, but I see you mentioned ring game league, that might be interesting. Although, part of the league is to play with fellow TPers, so it might be hard to do for a ring game league.

Either way, I'm in.

Invigilator 07-13-07 08:40 AM

Do any sites support private cash tables?

Reel Deal 07-13-07 09:26 AM

Definite correlation there.

THINKmcfly 07-13-07 12:23 PM

How about using it as a promotional tool and advertising it... A few of us who have enough online agreeing to put up X$ of money and there will be bonuses/etc to try and drag some people from 2p2/p5s here possibly?

Talking Poker 07-13-07 01:42 PM

The Storm's response was a little bit exaggerated, but not way off the mark. The leagues we've run in the past have definitely fun, but the turnouts weren't quite as strong as I hoped. One suggestion I would have if we do a MTT style league (where we all play together for $5 buy ins or whatever) would be to only play once per week. I think with less events, more people will make time for them. I used to think that with more events to choose from, it would be ok if people missed some (we only used the top 6 finishes out of 20 events total - something like that), but now I think one night per week - same night, every week - would be better.

I'm curious to hear your ring game suggestion... not sure how that would work. Remember, expected win rates aren't exactly consistent through the different levels, so we'd need to normalize them somehow. I really don't know how we'd do that... and we wouldn't be playing together, which is kind of the whole point. Otherwise, it's just an elaborate prop bet.

FYI - We've had three leagues before. Here is a link to , in case you'd like to see how it was set up, the results, and so on. We've also had , and our own forum . These were pretty cool. We even and made side bets on those.

Lastly, I love the idea of doing absolutely anything that would get us some new, solid members here... but we have to remember that there is a fine line between inviting people here, promoting some special event, and spamming. I think bunny got banned from 2+2 for posting about the TP Open last week. Complete BS, IMO. I mean, people link to 2+2 from here every day, but if someone from here posts there about a tourney we are having - oh no! Ban stack!!!

Invigilator 07-13-07 02:27 PM

I really like the idea of a MTT league played on the same night each week. In theory, we don't even have to decide. We could set something that goes for a while, take a break for a month, then do the next thing (leaving WSOP season untouched).

I mention this, because I would also like to see a series of other events. (Stud, Omaha, O8, 2-7 triple draw, 5 draw, HORSE, etc).

Maybe later in the year we could run a series of these with a certain number of finishers getting into a NL final.

Talking Poker 07-13-07 02:47 PM

We need to have it all spelled out ahead of time though... If we plan on having prize money for the top finishers, there has to be an end date to award said money.

Check out the link I posted to the last league, and I think you'll see exactly what you are describing.

Invigilator 07-13-07 03:30 PM

Took a peak. Definitelyl down for that format

THINKmcfly 07-13-07 06:30 PM

What I suppose I'd be talking about are elaborate prop bets... but I think if its marketed decent we could draw interest from other people on other sites to come here if we have some decent prop bets. I would think if I was talking low limit MTTs or cash, this forum could be a better fit for a lot of those guys so if we offered some incentive (league with money put up by TP, and i would definitely donate a healthy sum for the fun) of prizes/cash to win added to their prop bets I think we could gander some members... I'll spend some time this afternoon trying to draw up some guidelines for my ring game idea...

Robbr25 07-13-07 06:59 PM

I am up for another TP league.
Same opinions above about the turnout in the past.
I know I tried to make every one, but some just played in the first one and were never heard from again.
I also like the idea of mixing up the games.
One change could also be making them 6 max instead of 9 max.
Also it might be cool to put a heads up match(or two) in there.

juiCe[3x] 07-13-07 07:00 PM

I don't know if this would work but you could have like a freeroll for each event giving free entries into the field...I don't know if you can do this or not but that might bring in some people..

Talking Poker 07-13-07 07:15 PM

It's not possible to create 6 max tourneys on Stars. Maybe we should look into moving the league to Full Tilt this next time around though. I don't know what the deal with private tourneys is there.

Talking Poker 07-13-07 07:16 PM

So... a $5.50 freeroll, then? Not sure that's the type of players we really want to be targeting, but I believe Stars requires a minimum of a $100 prize pool for freerolls anyway.

Mr Eaton 07-15-07 03:04 PM

I would like to take part in some type of league. A variety of games(Omaha, heads-up, stud) would be great. One night a week would be perfect for my now busy schedule.

drewjax 07-15-07 04:09 PM

I dont know if anyone thinks this is a good option, and TP may definately frown upon this (understandably??), BUT............

We could let someone else do the work for us....

Why not have our own sub-forum-section of the Negreanu open?

They just started a new set, but I think they have a new set every quarter.

These are all on stars now btw.

Basically, they play a $10+1 HORSE MTT on tuesday nights and a $10+1 NLHE MTT on wednesday nights. I think they have seperate leaderboards for each. They have SOME added prize money, but not as much as they used to I guess.

ADVANTAGES:

1. We would get to play in larger MTT fields with a bunch of good players.
2. Its already set up, leaderboards will be updated for us etc.
3. We could make our own sidebets here (send money to TP for top TP finishers; maybe 1 each for horse/nlhe/combined)
4. We might get some good posters from FCP to come over here.
5. We would be able to cater to those who like to play something other than NLHE.
6. They structure is better than regular MTT's (I am pretty sure). They start with 3000 chips, and I think the levels are a couple minutes longer.

DRAWBACKS:

1. It wouldnt just be 'our little thingy'
2. We would have to navigate over to FCP to check out leaderboards/post links etc.
3. We could get a few idiots from FCP here who think the only reason for a poker forum is for flame wars (I dont really see this as a problem, as we can simply ban new morons!!)

If anything, maybe we could use the Neg-O as a guideline to set up our own thing.

Check out FCP forums for more info and details.

Disclaimer......

TP, feel free to delete/move this if you want.
I am certainly not intending to 'spam' another forum, its just a thought.
The two poker sites I check in to almost daily (for the past couple years) are here and FCP. I really just browse through the general forum, see whats up in the poker world. DN's blogs are good stuff too. I have certainly used our forum more in the way of strategy etc. In a huge forum, its hard to know who is giving advice. You get so many opinions, and some are from total fish.
Here, you get a smaller sample size of opinions, but you get mostly GREAT opinions, and its easier to tell the difference:p

Anyway, just my:twocents:

Flame away.

*cringes at TP's response*

Talking Poker 07-15-07 05:43 PM

No need to cringe. It's a good idea. I haven't looked into it yet though, so I don't have an opinion one way or the other (I guess it depends what a "sub-forum-section" is), but I certainly appreciate the idea.

drewjax 07-15-07 05:55 PM

Basically just that we will get our own group together and play in this, and have our own side-action for TP members. I guess I just think of it as us doing another TP league, but as part of a larger league. Dont know if I am making any sense?:donkey

Talking Poker 07-15-07 07:33 PM

I see. So basically, we'd be palying in another forum's private tourney. There's nothing there that would say "These are the Talking Poker" people, or reall,y any reason for them to even know about this site or to come check it out.... yes?

We'd probably be lucky to have 2 or 3 TPers at a given table. That's kinda lame for a TP league, IMO.

drewjax 07-15-07 07:57 PM

I guess we can add all of these to the 'drawbacks' list!

We could of course all maybe get the 'talking poker' logo as our avatar at stars. That would at least identify us, foster some chat during tourneys, and maybe get some members here.

I guess this really isnt that great of an idea for a 'TP league'. Moreso it could simply be a 'TP barrage challenge', if that makes sense.
