about to go broke, need advice

ive lost 4 sng's in a row, which has never happened to me before, and im down to the last of my fumes on empirepoker (18 bux or so)

the last sng i had AQ vs AT.... the idiot calls my check/reraise all in on a flushdraw, hits a 10 on turn, then hits the flush on river. that tourney went byebye....

then another tourney i had AT suited, i limp 2 others take a flop, which is Txx with 1 heart. checks, turn is the Jh. the guy bets the pot and i was tired so i jumped to the conclusion i had about 20 outs and called for half my stack.... river was a blank hewent all in i fold.... lost the rest of the stack on a coinflip.

anyways that shit is beside the point, i'm curious what should i do to rebuild from 18? ive made a comeback like this before, but i was kinda lucky, because i somehow got KQ vs KJ twice in a row at a 25NL table to double up twice, then start playing sng's again.... anyways yeah should i play a 10+1 sng, then a 5+1, or play three 5+1's? beating the rake in 5+1 is a pain in the ass and im sick of constantly getting screwed, i just wanna do a 10+1 and let fate decide whether ill get screwed for the last time...

1st person to post telling me what to do gets their way... gogogogo

If losing 4 SNGs in a row cleans out your bankroll, you're playing at stakes too high. That's a perfectly reasonable short term swing... even if you're the best player in the world. It happens.

Baseballa19 12-02-04 08:41 AM

I personally favor ring games now. I did SNG's for a while and had the same swings, but prefer the ring games because when you win a dollar, it's your dollar. It's easier to build your bankroll in ring games.

johnbaker 12-02-04 11:12 AM

yeah, but when you get screwed, thats $100 or more right there. if i hadnt gotten screwed in 2 or 3 big hands in omaha last week, i would be over 200 right now and you nice people wouldnt be reading this.... but thats poker

with 18 bucks left i can either spend 11 of it to get back up to 50, or play 3 6$ sng's and possibly just scrape by getting 3rd or 2nd, and barely getting my money back. idono i just dont like having to pay 20% rake cuz i dont feel good about 5+1's unless i win 1st, which only happens about half the time

Bankroll

Your Bankroll is obviously not large enough for the swings of the SNG tourneys you are playing. However if you dont mind putting money back in when you bust out that is not a problem.

If you make a decent living and this is just for fun then go ahead and keep trying the 10/1 SNGs. Or maybe try some MTTs. The 5/1 and 10/1 MTTs pay pretty good. You have to beat 30 people but you get 3x the pay.

Or try a small higher stakes tourney. Like the 2500 buck tourney that Empire offers every few nights, or something along those lines. Or bonus whore a little and build your bankroll up again.

Baseballa19 12-02-04 01:55 PM

Why is it $100 when you get screwed? I guess it depends on where you're playing. At Royal Vegas, you can play No Limit Games as low as .05/.10.

Not broke yet

$18 bucks and some luck should be enough. Spend some time scouting the 50/1 tables til you find one to your liking. Sit, and play very, very patiently and by the book. Very tight pre-flop, smart aggressive post-flop. Do this for hours and hours on end. Some bad beats at the wrong time are a distinct possibility, but assuming at least a little bit of luck, your bank roll should slowly inch upward. When the holiday reload comes (I hope!), withdraw and re-deposit. Once you have it back up to $100 or so, jump to 1/2. It’ll take a while, but your bank roll will be back to a healthy level.

Got Your Answer

Sorry to hear that man, this should get you back in the swing real proper like....... Good Luck!

brokeagain 12-02-04 05:54 PM

Seriously dude, just hit the .50/1.0 and you will grow that $18 into much more. Party once gave me a $15 bonus out of the blue 3 weeks after I cashed out, and I played .50/1.0 with it and rolled it up. In 2 days I was playing 3/6 with it.

BlibbityBlabbity 12-02-04 06:14 PM

Sweet, have you been promoted from fry cook yet, Broke? I hear cashiers get a free happy meal toy every week. :D

brokeagain 12-02-04 06:19 PM

Your mom has the best Happy meal I have ever eaten. The only thing I don't like is that she holds the nuts when I get dessert.

BlibbityBlabbity 12-02-04 06:33 PM

That's just what this forum needs..... a "yo mama" section :p

If you're truly down to your last $18 in the poker world, play .50/1 and try to ginrd your way back. Don't put it all down on one last SnG, as that's what got you into the position you're in, playing above your bankroll.

And hit up assorted freerolls. They aren't sexy and a royal pain in the ass but they're free, and more than a few people have turned freeroll winnnings into a decent bankroll. Plus they're good MTT experience.

About to go broke huh?

I'm going to resist the temptation to taunt you considering our previous talk about a $1000 HU match.

I now realise you're just a kid trying to get poker sussed.

I would advise you do some bonus hunting. There are some great bonuses at the various sites - try bet365poker - deposit $50 and turn that over playing 1/2 limit and they'll give you another $50.

Keep going through the dozens of bonuses and unless you're a terrible player, you should have no problem building your bankroll.

good luck

i was thinking about grinding out some profit at 0.5/1 omaha hilo, but i thought id have a better chance getting my bankroll (relatively) healthy by playing sng's. whatever, i'm just going to spend it on omaha unless i find a particularly weak group of people in 0.5/1 holdem

johnbaker 12-02-04 09:02 PM

gee thx.... i cant deposit or withdraw though. wanna know why? youre right, i AM a kid (18), which changes nothing besides the fact that i have a lot of trouble buying in / cashing out. once i get above 500 on my empire acct i'll cash some... maybe.

btw our heads up match is still on, unless i do something stupid like go broke in the next hour.... c ya then

brokeagain 12-02-04 10:55 PM

Dude, you're just lost aren't you?

johnbaker 12-02-04 11:05 PM

lol yea pretty much

heyyyy new update everyone..... i made 7 in O8b, then in a huge hand i got quartered with the nut straight.... some jackass stayed in with a 5 7 lo and took half the pot... that hurt me a lot, and after my 5588 met QQ on a board of 54Q84, im down to 7 bux (i never saw it coming because there was a flush draw on the flop and turn, and the QQ guy didnt reraise to protect from flushdrawers at any point during the hand... freakin retard)

anyways im going to chill out for a while, and play a 2 table 5+1 buyin sng whenever i start feeling better about this bullshit....

Hey,

I don't ever play s/gs for similar reasons that were mentioned above...

However, I have heard that a 20 buyin roll is large enough for s/gs. Sure most of you will think it's a bit big, but bigger is almost always better. Almost. ;)

Cheers,

Gutzz
