"Reading" faces - Can you tell if a smile is real or fake?
 

Look at 20 smiles and determine if they are real or fake:


I got 13 right and found this to be a little more difficult than I expected.

Interesting exercise.

14/20, and every one of the ones I got wrong was a man (except for one freaky looking she/he and I am not sure if it is a man or woman). Not sure what that means.

this seemed pretty tricky when i tried it out. from the beginning, i knew that i should pay attention to everything but their mouths. eyes n cheeks tell a lot. i got 17/20.

Here's what I got out of this: Brits are still butt ass ugly people.

16/20 for me. My question is this: how do we know the testers knew if they were being sincere or not. They could just have a REALLY good fake smile (or a really bad sincere smile)

How can you have a bas sincere smile?

I assume they caught them smiling randomly for the genuine ones and recorded those. And for the fake ones, they said, "OK, fake smile now."

On thing that threw me off was how quickly some of the legit smiles stopped, making them seem fake.

I scored well in this....but honestly, I would not know if I would answer the same way twice if I had to do it again.

I think the tells I used:

A) Wrinkles around the eye. The more wrinkle, the more genuine.
B) Giggles. Have no clue why, but I find people giggling more genuine.
C) Their reaction after they go back to 'normal'. The faster their facial expression turns back to normal...the more it appears to be a fake.

I have no idea how accurate it is to use these tells in general...but seemed to work here.

D) There cheeks
E) If they moved there neck/body when smiling. Some people leaned forward in happiness
