Live vs. Online

My recent move to college has hindered my social life, being 6 hours away from most of my friends, and have also lost most of my poker regulars. This has also brought about much more play for me online. I guess I'm just too lazy to go find people around me to play poker with, and would rather just sit in my room and play online. Does anyone have any feedback or comments on their experiences between online and live poker?

Someone else said it best, I can't remember who or what thread, but they said something like...

"Why would anyone want to go play live when you can just play online. Online there are no waiting lists, if your table is bad you can find a new one easily, it's more convenient, etc..."

Online is convenient for me, but probably too convenient since I find myself playing on tilt a lot more than I should which is easier to avoid live. I like to play live (well homegames) when I return home from college. They both have their pros and cons but online just seems better for me, especially since I live 9 hours away from the closest casino.

Ive been out ll night and not lying im fucked up as hell - sop ignote all my pelling mistakes... but honestly heres the deal

live is 100000x btter than online...nowq im not saying the random number generators are fuycked up, (although honestly i think they are sometimes, ive never seen some of the shit 4 of a king lose to royal flush, runner runner repeatedly etrc) but there are just so many more advantages

1: READS/TELLS....I dunno about you, but i can pick up so much shit by the way a person acts... now i dont mean if he bets and scratches his forehead he's bluffing, i jus mean in situations where i bet and they thinkand just call, i can tell if they are chasing/trapping/semi scared etc... basically i know to eithe rfire on the turn hard to take it down, or check and take my losses.

2: Play is more scared... i dunno about you, but if u play my style of poker, u want people to be more scared, bc when i see weakness i fire!!!

If I call you on a flush draw and i check the turn and u check behind me, im fuckin firing the river to steal if i hit or miss... if you are likely to call me with Ace high IT FUCKS UP MY GAME...it forces me to only play my hands and try to extract the most out of them.

3. Play feels more real.. when u r throwing chips into a pot it feels different than pressing a call button... thus the play is different./...not saying oine is superior to the other, just sayingit is different, and adapting properly to your table is one of the most important things u can do.

I may elaborate more on this tomorrowe...

You're in college, stop playing poker and go study.

JDMcNugent7 12-21-05 12:07 PM

Worst advice Ever.

PShabi 12-21-05 12:09 PM

Okay, how about this?

If you just got to college and it's "hindering" your social life, unplug the fucking computer.

For god's sake, I am so glad that online poker wasn't really around from 97-01.

Go out, meet people, get hammered, experiment with drugs, have sex with a fat chick.

But for god's sake get off the damn computer. There are other social activities other than poker.

You'll die a virgin with this outlook.

Was that better advice nuge?

JDMcNugent7 12-21-05 12:20 PM

LoL Ya alot better- I'm not in college yet and when I am it's going to be a freakin blast - I won't just be playing boring computer games - I just didn't like the "studying" advice... but I was kidding of course.

PShabi 12-21-05 12:37 PM

Oh to be 10 years younger. :p

If JD was like me, he'd be knocking up his girlfriend in a couple months. ;)

there's nothing wrong with playing poker at college. i'm in college and i play. you just have to get out more. don't be one of those people who NEVER leave their room. get out and have a good time. theres some good college advice on this board. don't overlook it.

wildcard1433 12-22-05 11:58 AM

pshabi, I love your advice. Except for the experimenting with drugs part, that's a bad idea. But yeah, I try to balance a social life with poker at college too along with school, and I think it's going just fine, I have a 3.7... GPA, so it's not impossible to do. I wish it was easier to find live games (house games) at college though, cheap ones too for us students who are paying our way because I love live games soo much more as well.

Govman6767 12-23-05 11:44 AM

In all my years playing poker all the bad beats I've taken I can't remember even once going on tilt in a live card room.
In my 2 years playing online I have 3 broken chairs, 2 holes in my closet doors, 1 hole in my wall, boxspring on my bed is broke, the cables on my computer speakers are ruined, 2 shattered picture frames, broken beer bottles, broken coffee mugs and numerous finger fractures.
I play much better in a brick room than at home.
I have more fun at home hooting and hollering
I win more online
I lose less in a brick room
I think I should quit poker forever and join the peace corp somewhere where in africa where cards are unheard off..... but then again I'd rather die of a poker induced heart attack or lung cancer from brick rooms then catch a blowdart in the neck from some hooligan :)
