Definition needed-Trips

Ok a set is when your holding a pocket pair and hit the 3 of a kind. Is the term "Trips" a general term for a 3 of a kind or is it only if you make the 3oak useing one of your pocket cards and two cards on the board?

The following is in no way a definitive answer, or a right one by any means.

My general understanding is that set = pp + one on flop while trips is paired board with one in the hole. I do get upset when people reference the two incorrectly.

In non-hold 'em games though the two can both be used for three of a kind.

I agree. But in Harrington on Hold Em he calls sets trips and vice versa sometimes. I think Harrington just effed up or something. Like I've mentioned before he doesn't even fold the bill of his ball cap so he's gotta be a little "off" sometimes. :)

Thanks for clearin that up. I thought trips was any 3 of a kind, my brother disagreed. I hate to say it...but he was right.

I agree with the responses so far.

But I will add that if someone called a set trips, it doesn't bother me NEARLY as much as when someone calls trips a set.

In other words, even though I believe them to be two different things, I am ok with people who believe that all sets are trips, but not all trips are sets. These people are saying trips, but they really mean........ "three of a kind."

Set AND trips are both "three of a kind." I guess what it comes down to is that I am ok with people using the terms "three of a kind" and "trips" interchangeably (even though I do not). But it drives me crazy when people add "set" to that mix, because a set is special - 2 in your hand and one on the board.
