I had the same issue with them. I used a utility bill, but I understand that you may not have that option.

Honestly, I don't really see why it wouldn't be safe - I mean, checks have your bank account number on them - but if you are worried about it, just block out the account number part and tell them you don't see why that is important to them. It's your name and address they are supposed to be verifying.
