Good News/Bad News

Bad news - only 11 people registered for the tourney.

Good news - I finished 2nd and collected $256 for my efforts.

Initial table - 6 handed, I'm in seat 5. We play about 6 hands with 5 when a guy sits down to my left just after the dealer mucks his cards. After the hand he asks - "What game is this?" after seeing a split pot. I tell him, "Stud hi lo." He says, "is it like Omaha hi lo where you just use 2 from your hand?" Ah, the wonderful world of resort/casino poker. I chipped up early with the kind of hands I hate in stud/8 - Buried Kings and Buried Queens. The (QQ)T hand the guy on my left called the BI with a K in the door. On 4th he caught a K and I caught a Q. My read was no K in the hole so I let him bet his 2 pr into me all the way. he made a flush on the river but I filled up. On another I called on the end with Kings up and got half a big pot. Unnerved me, but the people at my table were so bad, I couldn't fold.

Right before the first break, I lost a huge pot. I made a K-hi flush on 5th street with a rough low draw in a 3 -way pot vs the idiot on my left and the eventual winner. Checked to me after my low draw came in and I bet, idiot folds and 3rd player raises, no pair on the board and only 2 of a suit. I call and he turns over a well-hidden A-hi flush and a better low.

After the tables combine I play tight as about the 3rd shortest stack at the table and eventually triple up when we get down to 7 left. I steal a couple of pots and then the eventual winner goes on a tear. He knocks out 4 straight players and we're in the money. I'm 2nd stack. At one point 3 of us see 4th for the BI and I catch open Jacks (no other pair or draw) on 5th when chip leader catches a Q. I bet, shorty folds and big stack calls. I am not happy. 6th bricks for me, he bets and I fold. he flashes a Q from his hole cards. If not for how short the short stack was, I'd probably have gone to the mat as the pot was big enough to justify trying to make 2 pair, but from a $EV perspective it didn't make sense this time.

Shorty busts on the next hand and we're HU. I was outchipped by more than 9:1. HU lasted 2 hands. One split pot and the next one he made 2 pair on 4th and I couldn't hit any outs for a bigger 2 pair.

No complaints considering the fact I was sitting on less than 5 big bets for a long time with 7 left.

The word on Mohegan is that the new hotel and poker room will open Labor Day weekend. It also looks like the new MGM Grand at Foxwoods is very close to opening.

I ate dinner at the buffet after finding out I had more points on my Wampum Card than I thought, the took my profit and drove home. I'll save an Act II super for sometime between now and when the FPC starts a week from Monday.
