I don't know how that response makes you feel any better... but yeah, that's how it works.
I agree that it's stupid they they "charge" you (or me, as the affiliate - however you want to look at it) for "prizes" you win. I can understand being charged for redeeming points, but "prizes" in a contest like this should be 100% on them, IMO.
