I figured it would hook into netstat/have a built in netstat or something and look for connections to the sharkscope IP address. Of course using a proxy should get around that I would think.
I would think they'd be able to detect Firefox usage too. Of course, Firefox's (and IE's) new privacy mode may resolve that as well depending on the method they use. Oh - and ignore these smileys. Alex was rather insistent I click on the "funny faces":
