I think a good rule of thumb is that you should never sit down with more than 5% of your bankroll at a given time. So, that means 20x the buy in.

For a $25 table, you should have at least a $500 BR.
For a $100 table, you should have at least a $2000 BR.
For a $400 table, you should have at least an $8000 BR.
(I don't often play above this, but I suppose I could).
For a $1000 table, you should have a $20k BR.
And for the $25/$50 game on Full Tilt - $5000 buy in - you should have a $100,000 BR.

This is of course assuming you buy in for the table max when you sit down, which you always should do. If you don't, it would be smarter for you to move down and buy in for the max.
