In a nutshell: Some friends were playing poker one day a few months ago and the idea of "backing" a player for the WSOP came up. My friends suggested me to the guy who was interested in doing it (which I found quite flattering). The backer ended up deciding against ponying up the cash for the Main Event, but said he'd give me $2500 to play with, however I saw fit. I have never used a backer before, and being relatively unproven, I wanted to make sure I cut him a good deal. So, what I came up with was this:

If I cashed, he would get his $2500 back first, and then we would split anything left over after that. So if I cashed for a total of $2400, he would get all of it and I would get none of it. I also paid all my own expenses, etc. I did take the $580 "tip" off the top, which I hope he's cool with. I have a hard time thinking he's going to complain about a few hundred bucks when he looks at the check though.

When all was said and done, I wrote him a check for $23,050.

You'd be amazed how many people have said, "Oh, I would have backed you" after hearing that story. Suuuuuuuure they would have.

BTW, I had planned to play in Event #45 ($1000 NLHE) with my own money, but I was a little bit too busy with Day 2 of Event #44.
