Default 2/4 limit at Party

Far from the most glamorous or exciting, but dependably profitable. Table selection is important -- you want to make sure you find that optimal mix of maniacs and calling station. This is why I really find it difficult to justify spending too much time on the smaller sites, where I might actually be forced to play against competent opponents.

Default Questions for Tone.

Tone,

What do you usually buy-in for? Do you set a win or loss limit? Do you ever play the SnGs or any MTTs?

Edited to add: Sorry, this might be better off in a Private Message now that I think about it.

Default Good questions all

I buy in for $60. As I play tighter than I should, it's unusual for me to have huge variances, so win/loss limits aren't much of an issue. I also frequently play the $10+1 NL SNGs and three tables with moderate success. I find these are definitely more enjoyable, but less profitable.

I also occasionally play the ridiculous $5+1 SNG 11:30 PT tournaments with gigantic fields. I can often crack the top 130 to make my money back. And sooner or later I'm going to win enough coin flips to get lucky in one of those and make some bank.

Lastly, I don't have a rake back deal, which I'm sure is costing me a small fortune in lost opportunity, but am afraid of opening yet another account after my Empire account was frozen.

Any particular reason why you prefer limit over no limit? I like being able to push all in whenever I want. I also feel like I get sucked out more when I play limit games. What about you?

Default A grinder's manifesto

This is another opportunity for that scared money thread we said we needed to start. When I buy in to a tourney, I know I’m not going to lose any more than X dollars. Having mentally converted them to chips, I can make the right decisions, and do pretty well. Also, freeze-out tourneys & SNGs rewards my too-tight nature, as if you bust out, you are done, rather than just being able to reload.

But playing NL cash games, I let myself get bullied, and fold to all-in re-raises that I probably shouldn’t. And if I do win, I rathole (another good thread) which eliminates the possibility for me to bully the table. These are serious leaks, but at least I know about them.

So playing 2/4 on Party is a better match for my low-risk/less reward nature. Ultra tight pre-flop, pound away with premium hands, know when to let go if need be. Suck outs happen, but not at a rate that people miss chasing four card flushes or inside straights and pay me off.

NL is a game of skill and finesse. Limit is a game of consistency. A bot could (and perhaps do?) do what I do.

There’s a lot of talk in other forums/sources about understanding why you and your opponents play poker. I play 2/4 at Party to win a small but steady amount of money. It’s not an intellectual exercise, it is not improving my game, the thrill of victory, or any of that. Just a steady, reliable few bucks a week. To paraphrase the Notorious B.I.G, I’m a true grinder for real.

I play microlimits on gaming club, freerolls, and occasionally a buy-in tournament.

Count another in for the $25 NLHE tables at Party. I think I've made the most online at these tables than at any other type.

My record for 1 buy-in is taking $25 and getting it up to $293 at one table.
