How is that logic faulty?
The man has the second nut hand and the only hand that beats him is exactly AT. You are playing it improperly if you continually put your opponent on AT and check/call the river. Sure, it may be right in this situation (we can't know his read or what may have told him to only call). But, I think you are playing bad poker if you check/call the river with aces over nines boat.
