How to sports bet with a bookie?

I want to know how to sports bet with a bookie before i make any moves..Say i know a bookie and i want to place a bet on a game. I bet $22 to win $20. I know if i lose then i owe him $22, but if i win i receive my $22 back and the bookies money? I'm confused on that part...am i like betting against the bookie? Does the bookie place his bet and if i win i receive his money too? Where else does the money come from?
