Default fish list

heyyyyy i just got a bright idea.... lets make a public list of fish on this site at the various poker sites (i know you really dont need to list the ones on party, but whatever). we can write down the names of idiots when we see them in games, and put them into calling station, timid, and maniac categories, and also organize these people by the kind of games you met them in (keep sng's and ring gamers seperate), and let everyone on the forum benefit. just a thought

lol thats a awesome idea... put them into catagories like in Phils book. Jackal (Maniac), Mouse (only bets/plays the goods), Elephant (calling machine). Eagle and Lion not too many on party that I know of. Stars on the other hand tons of good limit players. Eagle are only the top 100 players in the world or so.

So where would this go, and how would we post them up.

I am quite sure TP doesn't want us posting a seperate post for each one

I think it is a great idea.

this sounds like a reasonable idea, but i think that it might cause more trouble than it is worth. the information that you get on this board may have been good for a specific game, or a specific situation, but if you rely upon notes made by another person then you might be in trouble.

the only good example i can think of comes from baseball. whenever my team had stolen the signs of the other team, and we knew what pitches were coming, i never wanted to know what the pitch was. it sounds counterintuitive, but reacting to what i saw always worked better for me than relying upon what someone else told me. i always got overanxious when i knew that a specific pitch was coming, and i became a much poorer hitter in these situations. i never wanted to know, and it served me pretty well.

in poker, i think this could be trouble because it will make good players play mediocre hands just because they have another player rated as a fish. an if the player is rated as a fish by someone else, that information might not be correct by the time that i went to play them.

just my two cents, but i wouldnt stoip anyone from making a list. i just wouldnt rely on it myself

I wonder if we could share player notes files too. I'm far from a computer expert but they are saved in some kind of file right? This might possibly be seen as cheating though, seeing as it's just more than just a name. It would be nice though to be able to check a database(especially in tournaments) about a players style.

sharing player notes or pokertracker data via PM sounds like a good idea... but a public fish list?? I don't know how I'd feel if I was surfing and saw my name on a list like that.... I know I would not be pleased.

yeah i think that using phil's animal types would be the easiest and simplest method of organizing these guys. also a short summary of their style, like "pauses for 3-5 seconds then all-in means bluff"

i have some pretty advanced tells from partypoker/empirepoker that i'll describe in another thread tonight, you guys will love how I read people on these two sites hahahah

i understand what you mean, but in baseball when youre batting you have to clear your mind of any distractions and focus on making contact with the ball. a lot of this relies on reflexes, and if you're busy thinking about what type of pitch is coming then you dont have as much focus on reacting quickly. in poker, you have more than a split second to make a decision, and if people have definite tells on a player, and you only act on a tell when you are sure of it, then nothing but good can come from sharing information. also, we can update our list depending on how people improve / change gears.. for example, i know that a lot of players play differently during the day than at night. there tends to be a lot more drunks at night, and this should be taken into consideration along with other things.

lol it isnt JUST a list of fish... someone posted saying that we should list all the animal types, which i agree with. we want to know who the terrible players are, and how to take advantage of their bad play, but also who the great players are, and how to trap / outplay them (or avoid them, whatever floats your boat).

i think we should have a seperate section for this list, and have sub-sections for each different animal type. Or maybe just have 1 thread that people list all their information in, and everyone can look at their info when it is posted.

btw sorry about quadruple post, but i wanted to address each response individually

I have to agree with eddo here... I don't really see the value in this. For starters, just because someone else things Player A is a fish doesn't mean I would. What if they rated him wrong, based on the game and situation they were playing him in? I'd rather make my own notes, based on thigs I have seen with my own eyes. I used to make people with general notes, but after a while, I realized almost everyone was a bad player, and it was pointless. Instead, I find it much smarter to wite detailed notes about how the players played in specific situations. I've also started using Poker Tracker's advanced note capabilities, where I can export the exact stats (whatever I want) for all the players I have ever played with. Now that's useful.

Also, with so many of us playing on so many different sites at so many different limits, what are the chances we'd even get a chance to use this info? I have thousands of notes, and when I play, I still seem to only have 1 or 2 at the most on any given table I'm playing on.

It's an interesting idea, but I don't think it's worthwhile.

Now, developing some sort of shared Poker Tracker database with detailed player stats (as opposed to subjective observations) - that is something I can see a value in.

I would be. More action for me!

You WANT people to think you're a fish.

I want to keep the fish I know to myself, but for all you who didn't already know there is a way to track down fish on your buddy list. All's you have to do is search for a table.

I would be willing to share stats - minus mine. I have over 3K people, 25K hands played by me. I would think a custom export would need to be written. Not sure PT has an export feature -- minus your stats.

Hmmm that sounds like a good idea actually. Maybe I should volunteer my screen names to the fish list... LOL
