Default Time to call it quits?

First and foremost, I apologize if this thread is hard to follow, I'm tired.

I'm going to be very open in this thread so I'm asking for relevant serious responses only, here goes

The first time I gambled was when a friend of a friend was dealing blackjack at his house. I didn't know the first thing about it, but was enjoying the expeirence, I was playing with money I could afford to lose and I was having fun. Five or so years later, I'm addicted to online poker and am playing with money that I should be saving. I'm sure half of the responses I get will go along the lines of...you belong in gamblers anoymous.

I am thinking about quitting playing poker because I have lost a lot of money. I started off playing on party poker and sat down at a .50/1 table. I went through that pretty quickly, and realized the strategy involved in the game. Anyway I eventually went through a lot of $50 deposits into Party. Ok, Im getting a little sidetracked here so I'll get to the point. I've guesstimated that I've lost about five grand, including my life savings playing poker. I can't hold on to any money, because it just goes straight online. Some wonder how I can keep playing if I just lose time and time again.

After going through 1k, and deposited $50 and built it up to over 1k. Of course I lost all of this.

nevertheless, i kept playihg poker and play pretty much daily. Whether I have real money online, or am playing a freeroll, I am poker freak. I'm obviosuly in need of some advice. Should I continue playing poker, hoping to fall into a grove that will start a new era of winning, or should I cut my losses, swear of poker, and start living a different lifestyle.

ok, look I read your post and I want to comment. But here is the deal, I played a bullshit session earlier today and dropped 3 buyins experimenting a different (read not compatible with my personality) style, got drunk off my ass, hosted a great cocktail/dinner party, let my kids stay up too late, eventually settled them down and got them to sleep, cleaned up, and before letting the dog out for the night was compelled to sit down at the computer to check tp.com. maybe I also have a problem because I wasn't content with my real life and feel the need to sincerely reply, who knows.

I prelude all that to say that if you think you have been running bad, then study, figure out where you can improve, and get better. But if you think you have a problem, stop playing poker. Stop posting here, stop even lurking at poker sites. I may care too much about a lot of people i have never met, or only met briefly, and I may spend way too much time working to be a mediocre poker player, but the day I say I am addicted or am a losing player I am done. With it all. there is too much life out there and not enough time to do it all. If poker isn't a means to some ends in your offline real life, then you are a loser no matter how much money you win or lose at online poker.

if you can add to that that you are a losing player but have the sense to post it here, although it is -ev for me in some cosmic way, withdraw whatever money you have online, never play poker again and never visit another poker site.

sorry man, but you will never hear it as straight as that again.

good luck. i hope our paths never cross again.

Default Sorry to hear this

It sounds as if you have realized you have a problem, even if you are still struggling to admit it to yourself (if not to us).

You are well aware of what you need to you do. And there's no shame in it. This may be something you struggle with for the rest of your life, but there's help available, and you need to take advantage of it.

Best wishes. May be this be the last thread on this forum that you ever read.

5k isn't running bad, it's playing bad without one ounce of SELF-control. Thus you need help OUTSIDE OF YOURSELF. Here is the big question...

Have you told your family or people you know "in person"? You see, you are still pretty anonymous on the Internet. Admitting it to live people who are close to you will help bring home what you need to do.

Melioris said it best. Don't play, don't come here, don't lurk.

For a minute I thought a compassionate banning would be a good idea, but not coming here anymore voluntarily would be much better.

Good luck and good-bye.

This is another very good reason to quit. Here, on this forum, we will help you. However, when you sit down at the table EVERYONE'S job is to take you.

run NOW!

This will be harsh, but brief. As best I can tell (not only from this thread, but from all your previous posts too):

1. You are not a good poker player (and probably not even an average one).
2. You have no bankroll management skills or self control.
3. You are losing money you can't afford to lose.

Add that up, and you get:

You have a gambling problem.

Yes, the very obvious and very correct answer is that you should quit forever. Immediately. Don't even wait until you lose whatever you have left online. Withdraw any money you have left and uninstall all the poker software you have on your computer. Cancel your poker magazine subscriptions and sell your poker books. Stop visiting this site and every other site that you read that has anything to do with gambling.

Get a new hobby that doesn't involve the potential to lose money, and get your life back on track.

GL.

Thanks for every one of the responses...and for being honest. I think now I have enough sense to at least take a much needed break from playing. If I decide to come back and play some more and continue losing, then I guess it is time to call it quits. Thats all I have to say for now, thanks again for the feedback and I will see everyone on the other side.

Sounds like you need much more than a break. Really seek help and hit the responsible gambling tabs at all of you sites and then uninstall all of them.

Quit playing poker and send an email to all the sites you visit asking them to ban your account for a minimum of one year, preferably forever.

Seek and attain help, from a professional or group session setting.
