Default Talk Talk Talk (WPT tonight) Spoiler Alert

Kido Pham likes to talk at the table. Tonight he may have talked himself out of some cash. (he's still in as I type this)

He's just doubled up after an amateur opponent makes a bad call with a flush draw.

He raises with K 7 . Amateur shoves with A Q . Huge overbet. Kido's getting about 7:5 on the call.

he starts talking. The gist is "you tell me what you want me to do. Fold, call, whatever. You decide." So far no problem. Amateur is silent. Kido gets frustrated. Talks and talks. Now he gets frustrated and says this.

"You still get to decide, I give you three seconds then I decide. Three two one now I call." Amateur starts to move to flip- up his cards and Kido says something like, "No, I haven't called yet, I mean now *I* decide." Daniel N says, "Uh, you said 'I call'"

Tournament director is called. makes the correct decision and deems Kido's
statement a call. AQ holds up.

Gotta watch what you say.

After listening to the video it is VERY clear IMO, that Pham was saying that he (his opponent) lost his chance to call it (call what he does) and now he (Pham) is going to call it himself , and he did not mean I call the bet. I think this is very clear and while it may be considered a call via technicality, I dont agree with the decision

You don't agree with the decision?

If you say "I call" in poker, you called. You can't trick your opponent into turning his cards over, seeing that you are crushed and then say, "No, no... I didn't mean I CALL the bet. I meant I call a friend to help me out with this difficult decision."

I agree that his intent was not to call the bet, but he said the words "I call it now" and that's it. That's a verbally binding action, plain and simple. The ruling was correct.

He said "You lost your chance to call it. Now I call it.

All Im saying is that it is 100% CLEAR to me what he was talking about (I get the decision now, not you)

Pham told his opponent they he gets to make the decision should he (Pham) call or fold. 3 more seconds 2 more 1 more, ok now you dont get the decision whether or not I call, now I do (it was phrased you dont get to call it anymore now I call it)

Like I said, from a technical standpoint the ruling was fine... but I think it is 100% obvious what Pham was saying when he said "Now I Call it" he was talking about the decision was his now, no longer his opponents, because he didnt answer in time

Yes, I understand that and have never thought otherwise. I was responding to this part of your first response:

Like I said, from a technical standpoint the ruling was fine

Not just from a "technical" standpoint. The ruling is correct, period. It can't be left up the dealer to interpret the meaning or the intent of the words. That just leads to angle-shooting.

No matter what the context, the words "I call" have a single, inalterable meaning at the poker table.

Exactly.

This is why you don't talk about getting a raise while you are playing poker, for example.

At the WSOP two years ago, some jackass kept SINGING some stupid jingle he made up about going all in. "All in, all in, all in!" over and over again.... He wouldn't stop and it was annoying as hell. I eventually suggested that this be a verbal declaration and he be forced to go all in the next time he sang. He thought this was preposterous, but after the floor was called.... the singing stopped.
