Default Interesting comments (at best)

So I was playing on pokerstars in a 5$ heads up match, and some donk comes along. I had gotten him down to about 750 or so when i have AQ. Flop comes AK3 rainbow. I check, he bets about 1 4th of his stack. I raise allin, he calls with 9h7h. He proceeds to hit runners for a flush, and I make a comment along the line of WTF? He tells me this exact quote

part of poker is gut feeling, that's why it's called gambling

WOW where do I start? We start on a whole arguement about how poker is not gambling becuase a lot of skill is involved.

The main question is, is poker gambling?

Oh, and the other question is will people like this ever win? ever?

Yes it is gambling to some extent, but is it the same gambling as playing the lotto, or playing the slots?

Yes, poker is gambling, but no, of course it's not the same as the lotto, etc. There IS some amount of skill involved.

And no, that guy, who felt his runner runner flush coming, will never be a winning player. Not in the long run anyway.

Poker is gambling, as you can not control the cards you are dealt or the cards that come out.

If you are drawing you can not control whether or not your draw completes, or if your opponent is drawing you can not control whether or no this draw completes and beats your made hand

The skill comes, in betting, where you can make players make mistakes by gambling, while you can gamble with the odds tilted in your favor.

and of course taking down pots uncontested

As far as the 'feel' goes, obviously in this instance it's stupid... but I have heard many top level players, and even some pros talk about 'feel'...Not in a retarded sense like this...but generally in race situations whether or not to gamble etc...eh its hard to explain, TPs gunna go apeshit on this comment anyway

So if you were on the flush draw, and you say it was to the NUT, how did he call with ace high and win? Wouldn't you also have ace high?

I hate when I hear a pro on television say something like "I called b/c I felt it coming." Yeah, sometimes it's just in the excitement of the moment. But sometimes they'll say something like that in an interview post-tournament. Bullshit! I guess it makes me realize that even some of the best in the world have a little bit of degenerate gambler in them. You go on a rush and you're hitting everything? It's random variance!!

I agree -- BUT I think card rushes do occur and dead rushes do occur also. I realize this makes no sense bc technically there is the same 52 cards in each deal all random...but I have had sessions where I was just hitting it and session when I wasn't.

I remember one session I was dealt 15 (yes 15) medium pocket pairs and I saw every flop and didn't hit one set.

I had another session where I flopped 4 sets with 6 middle pairs. That same session I couldn't miss a draw, I forget the actual stats, but I was nailing every draw I flopped. I was also getting dealt great cards, I had Aces 3 times King 4, etc etc.

I guess yea it was random varience, but I was on a good rush of cards and it continued.... I dunno

Thats all I was saying. The final table of WSOP players are generally players who have been on card rushes for 6 days. I was simply saying these rushes of great cards or cold rushes do exist

Absolutely. My point was that it's all within the realm of random variance. As one of my statistics professors used to say, "Statistics are lumpy." Meaning you'll get the appearance of non-random-looking patterns that are quite random.

Doyle Brunson almost always plays the hand after he wins a pot.

I think you would be right in most circumstances. Any kind of "rush" or whatever you get from playing the hand right after you win a pot is purely psychological. Surely that must be a big part of why he does it. If not, then yes, he's wrong.
