umm...just so you know he was opened ended not on a gutshot... and he also had two over cards. And he did have 4:1 on his call plus implied odds. Really not a bad call at all IMO

Gah! You're right, somehow in my frustration I missed that it was an open-ended draw.

Ignore this post, I was just venting.

(And no, I'm not folding it pre-flop! The problem was my donkey call on the river, my hand was the nuts after the turn, and I couldn't let it go after a terrible river card.)

Im not suggesting one way or the other, but J8s is not a very strong hand, especially from the blinds OOP

The strength between a suited 1 gapper and a suited 2 gapper is fairly large, and position is a key. I'd be more likely to call this on the button, hopefulling convincing one of the blinds to call and all but forcing the limper to call. Now I get to see a flop with 3:1 on my money and the button.

And the more I think about it, the more I like the opponents call. Like I said he has 8 outs to a straight (plus two over cards)... but the main thing is his implied odds. If an 8 comes he has the nut straight on a 4 card straight board, so anyone with a Jack is paying him off his entire stack (maybe a 6 also!). Both of his draws are to the nuts, one of which is the nuts on a board VERY likely to pay him off. HUGE implied odds

Definitely he made the right call...I'm just a dork for not recognizing that he had an open-ended draw before I posted this.

I won't play J8s every time, certainly...but with a limper in front and the BB yet to act, there's a real good chance I get to see this flop for $75 against three other players. In that situation, I will play this hand about 90% of the time.

My river call was horrible...it was disturbing for me to watch my hand (which was the nuts on the turn) go to almost worthless after the river, and I made an emotional play instead of a smart one. So no, it's not a bad beat, but if TP wants to create an "I'm an idiot" forum, I'll happily re-post this thread there.

LOL.... can't do that. If we did, the other forums would become ghost towns!
