I usually start off with hip hop/rap to pump me up. Cypress Hill, Snoop, Beastie Boys are examples.

Then transition to more mellow stuff so I'm not totally on the edge in the middle of a session after I'm bound to take a few beats. bob dylan, jack johnson, weezer type stuff.
