Yeah he didn't get along with the GM. But you have a business to run, put your personal shit aside and win.

You have to consider that even though his assistants knew he was on for at least another year he lost four of his top guys. That doesn't bode well for his staff's confidence.

Marty has no control over that though so how do you penalize him for it?

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving team. A pleasure to see that no-class group self-destruct. Almost as much of a pleasure as watching Belichick put that whiny brat Tomlinson on kick coverage in the Pro Bowl.

What has Marty ever done in the playoffs?

I agree 100% with you but the thing is that Bill Cowher had done absolutely nothing in the playoffs ever as well but one season it all clicked for him and he won a superbowl.
Cowher was just as bad as Marty if not worst come playoff time.

![]() What is the team's track record for coaching hires and fires? I don't know about SD, but Pitt. has only ever had 3 coaches in team history if I'm not mistaken.

Actually, it's not even close. And come on, man, you're way too smart to make blanket statements like that without checking up on them first.
Here's the word: Cowher: 15 years coaching, 12-9 in playoffs, two Super Bowl trips, one win. In Cowher's 15 years, he reached the playoffs 10 times. Of those 10 times, he won his first-round game 8 times. Schottenheimer: 21 years coaching, 5-13 in playoffs, zero Super Bowl trips. He made the playoffs 13 of those 21 years, but lost in the first round in 9 of those 13 years. Between the Chiefs, Redskins and Chargers, he has made the playoffs just three times in the past nine years, and hasn't won a playoff game since 1993.

Marty may not have control over that, but you'd think that if they believed in his chances of winning a super bowl they might stick around to beef up their resume. Not to mention just getting a super bowl ring. I can't have much confidence in a guy that has the core of his staff walk.
Plus, if you consider the tension between the GM and Marty how would you expect the Charger's ability to fill those vacancies in a timely and efficient manner? I'm not saying I agree with letting the guy go, but I see some of the reasoning. |
