Dont waste your time, seriously. Unless the prize pool is huge (say a $100K guarantee), then maybe. But that many people, its just insane. How many hours did you play to come in 10th? And what did you get for it? I bet it was a LONG time and you made not much.
Now dont get me wrong, free money if free money, I've been there done that. But there are lots of easier ways to make free money playing poker online than these things.
Why are you playing these? I'm assuming you are somewhat new to online, dont have much of bankroll, and/or are underage. Again there are easier ways to get a bankroll. Some prima sites like Royal Vegas/7 Sultans etc. will give you $10 to start playing with, and have micro-limit tables of all kinds. (some donkeys will even start a new poker forum and give you $25 just for posting too, lolol....) I started with $10 on Royal Vegas, $20 on Pacific (which I dont know if they give anymore), and $25 from our generous host to build my bankroll. I would suggest playing some of these micro-limit cash games (and maybe a few $1 tourneys), and build up from there, if that is what you need. The prima sites also run daily $1000 freerolls if you have played 100 raked hands in the previous day. 1st pays $250, 2nd $120; I was able to take second in one of these to also give me a boost. Once you get up to a decent roll, then you can do what you feel most comfortable at. If tourneys are your thing as you say, play in some of the nice guaranteed tourneys with decent overlays, and a somewhat manageable number of entrants.

Not sure if any of this really applies ot you, but it may help.
