I believe the Gap Concept is from Sklansky's Tournament Hold 'Em book. It's been a while since I read it, but I'm pretty sure that's where it came from.
And yes, I believe it will only work well for you in tourneys, and will actually hurt you in cash games. You might want to give that chapter a reread

Gap effect is good to use, as you don't overplay your hands too much. Early position hands are the best.
